I suspect that Cheeks, ie Anyone but Nifong might well get the votes of:

1. Republicans.

2. Black Democrats who are offened at being played.

3. Anyone with a sense of justice.

I suspect Nifong will get the votes of:

1. Racist blacks.

2. Men hating leftists.

3. Hard core Dims.

The question is which group is bigger in Durham and will turn out.

""We had a lot of irate, irate Republicans who couldn't vote for district attorney"

The voters of Durham, black & white, best think twice before they cast a vote for Mike Nifong. Any one of them could be his next target. He has proved he can indict a ham sandwich as they always say. He can also indict any resident of Durham. Think about it.

North Carolina is my home and I can't wait for election day so I can vote.

We're old enough to have read that in school. They don't do that any more. After all, Melville is a dead white male.

Thanks for the sample ballot. I see how it's set up now. I also see the dilemma. I hope people will be disgusted enough to mark Cheeks name. I'm thinking Monks & snowballs probably have a lot in common. Actually I kind of wish he had just stayed out of it. I don't like a 3 way. Splits the vote too much. I'd like to have seen what would have happened in the primary had it just been Freda & Fonger.

Nifong is obviously under a lot of pressure to dump this case. I suppose there is still a possibility but of course he has to hold on until after the election. If he loses then it's a no brainer to stop the hoax. If he wins, he either has achieved his goal and drops it to avoid the train wreck heading his way or he considers the win a validation of his position. Since he is obviously insane, he'll probably pick the latter.

I'm worried about an outcome like this

Nifong: 49%
Cheek: 48%
Monks: 3%

51% don't want Nifong but he wins anyway. That's why Monks is a spoiler if he divides the vote even a little.

I can see how a DEM who doesn't like Nifong, but not used to voting anything but a straight party ticket, would vote straight DEM and then check the UNA Cheek. This would spoil the ballot and lose Cheek a vote. There are a lot of ways where Nifong wins with a minority of votes.

All reports are that he has an obsessive personality and, if given the opportunity, will follow it to the bitter end just to try and prove he is right.

I'm concerned about that too. Monks could be problematic if they actually take the time to write his name in & check the box. A lot of people have enough trouble as it is just figuring out HOW to vote. Some of them find punch cards overwhelming.

I hope having to remember and write down his name will limit the Monks vote.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I have a library at home full of all the classics and fine literature of my youth (we call it the den to keep from sounding like snobs). If I could have gotten my son to read 1/10th of the books in that room, he'd be an Einstein. But, no, the computer's the thing. It's in there, too.

Have we determined that a simple majority wins? (forgive me, I missed it if the answer was posted earlier)

If you don't mind me going all picky on you (after all I used to be an academic), it's a plurality (i.e. the most votes), even if you don't get a majority (i.e. >50%).

The real question is how much of a plurality do you have to get to avoid a run off. In the primary it was 40%.

If one Party candidate files they move to the Nov Ballot, no primary.

If two Party candidates file, they compete in the primary, winner moves to Nov Ballot.

If three or more Party candidates file, they compete in the primary and the winner moves to the Nov Ballot—MAYBE. To move directly to Nov, the winner in this case must receive a SUBSTANTIAL PLURALITY or the second place candidate can, in writing, request a second primary. Substantial Plurality is more than 40% of the total votes cast for that race.

Rules for winning or moving to the November Ballot

I don't see a similar release for the general election. I think Ken H posted the answer for the general election but I can't remember it now.

You must be kidding, Sue! Do the right thing, without regard to skin color? A university, bastions of politically correct social engineering that they are, stand up for three white boys, regardless of the fact that they were that university's own students, against a BLACK FEMALE???
