So indictments without speaking to the accused, even if the accused requested an interview, is not a violation of any rights? I guess this is the way the system works--it just scares the heck out of me.

Not under NC law. It is frightening. NC has a bizarre indictment, grand jury and charging process. The state has no procedural checks and balances.
