I wondered that too, but then I can see how perhaps they put in small amounts of fuel as they can afford it. I would like to know how the contestants spend their down time. Such as do they eat their meals together and do they stay in comfy luxury hotels.

Didn't they used to show the down time in the first season or so? It would be interesting to see the teams interact while not in race mode.
