Hendrix Tops List Of Greatest Guitar Solos
Gilmour, Knopfler, Page Follow Rocker On List

NEW YORK -- When it comes to great guitar solos, Guitar One magazine said Jimi Hendrix tops the list
According to the magazine, Hendrix's solo on "Machine Gun" is No. 1 on its list of the 101 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time.
The magazine said Hendrix "can conjure the sound and fury of war -- bombs, guns, diving fighter jets, showers of ammo -- in a single three-and-half minute guitar solo."
It beats out David Gilmour on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," which the magazine described as "not overrated, simply transcendent."
Mark Knopfler's solo on "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits is third, followed by Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven."
Hendrix comes back to take fifth place, for "All Along the Watchtower."
Just making the list at 101 is Brad Gillis, on Night Ranger's "Sister Christian."
Guitar One's guitar solo issue comes out Sept. 19.
Was that in Philly ? I was at that show . My band played in town that nigh tand we got invited . UNREAL performance. Sabbath should have stayed home thta night .

Yeah, Ritchie kicks 99.9% of these "editors' pick" guitar-heros asses. They seem to be more concerned with sentimentality and tradition than logic or actual standards of quality.
I can't wait to hear a technical explanation of why "Star-Spangled Banner" (which is not hard to duplicate at all) is superior to "Eruption", "Child in Time", or frankly any among hundreds of virtuositic solos from the 70's and 80's.
Satriani, Vai, Johnson, Moore, Malmsteen, Blackmore, Schenker, Marino, or MacAlpine ever cross these people's minds?
I was thinking Melissa "Sweet Melissa" but now I am bluring the issue with over all melody and not just guitar.

Detroit. Cobo Hall. Still my favorite concert ever. Except maybe Ted Nugent in 1979. Ah, those were the days.
That's too bad IMHO. I like "Crossfire", "Texas Flood", "The Sky Is Cryin'", "Voodoo Chili", and "Pride & Joy", among others.
Zappa was great . BETTER is really not the way to look at artist . Again , many of these guitarist were trying to accomplish completly things with their instrument . Zappa by the way worshipped Jimi's playing .
Ian was originally a guitarist. He switched to flute because "it was easier to carry around"
Improv straight from brain to fingerboard, no pause to figure out where the notes are located, the hand goes to the right fret instantly. He had the gift and would be a fine jazz musician today.
Johnny Winter , when Johnny was on he was unreal !!!!!
Although Im a fan of Hendrix and agree on Machine Gun being one of the best,along with Bold as love..Stevie Ray should be at the top of this list too for any of his great solos.

It was the same in Detroit. VH completely blew them off the stage. I think Oz and company were just going through the motions at that point and really didn't care. It was the only time I ever saw Black Sabbath and, of course, it was a dissapointment to see them so lackluster. They were the epitome of heavy metal in their day.

Hendrix also played left handed and used a right handed guitar turned upside down.
I heard BB King say once that Hendrix could carry two different beats at the same time.
Hendrix was my favorite as a kid.

m yea Trower was great . So many great players and solos. Most of these players would all tell you that polls and list of greta players and solos are absurb.

Absolutely. Man, he was something else. Even the slower work on that song he wrote for his mother (forget the name) was terrific. So sad, he died way too young.
Hehe. Journey's problem was also an ugly lead singer. The fact is, in a rock band, if you have a front man, he better be special, not only in vocal ability, but in looks. He doesn't have to be "pretty," but does have to have "that special something" (like Jagger).
