In the Marines the proper term is "Scuttlebutt".

It's where you find out the "Poop".(what's happening etc.)

Hence any unsubstantiated information gathered is referred to as Scuttlebutt.

I had someone from Arizona tell me that I had a Michigan accent the first time we spoke on the phone. I couldn't detect any accent on her end.
