Last month I visited a relative who traveled to Iwo Jima about 10 years ago. He passed on to me some back sand and a relay from General Kuribayashi’s communication center. With the restricted access, the bunkers and much of the stuff in it's still as we left it 60 years ago.

There are a lot of the bunkers that still have the guns in them. I wasn't much into going into the caves. They have scorpions and some nasty centipedes which give me the heebee geebees, but I know people who found cases of IV bottle, cases of hand grenades, weapons, bullets, etc. The Japanese let you go into the caves, but you aren't supposed to remove anything. If you find a body you are supposed to report it.
