It boils down to: there are some bad drivers out there.

They did this with a third-party wireless card.

A few years ago, I remember something similar for Linux with ethernet NIC drivers. Update your drivers periodically.

You do not want one of these installed on your system. You should actually try to prevent getting one of these installed.

Which brings me back to - exactly why would I have a "root kit" installed? If it takes that being installed for someone to hack in, then duh...
