Interesting. The University of South Carolina was founded in 1801. I have no idea how or when they came up with the name Gamecocks.

And why not the Fighting Methodists? I kinda like that.

I've never seen gamecocks (i.e. roosters) fight except in very old film since it's been outlawed for some time, but it was popular thereabouts at the time U South Carolina was founded and said animal is marked by its aggressive fighting spirit. Maybe Methodists are too? Guilford College in NC shows its founding heritage by being the "Fighting Quakers" which given that Quakers are pacifists is kind of a contradiction.
