The conspiracy nuts referred to in the article are the closest thing we have in the Western World to Muslims. Muslims in great numbers around the world believe in all sorts of incredible plots and secret machinations designed to subvert their success. So it is not surprising that we have a few. The inclination to string various events into a conspiracy must be an element of human nature. So the real difference between the Muslim world and the West (mainly America but in relative terms Europe too) in some sense is the kook density of the population.
KOOK DENSITY. I love it! We probably have acceptable concentrations on the order of milliKooks whereas they are probably up in the kiloKook range. Too bad they don't have a detector available, like a smoke alarm.
