Whether Wallace actually believed his own rhetoric about race is entirely besides the point. Its a matter of public record that he stood for segregation in the 1960s, that his constituency approved, and that he ably used the Confederate flag as a political symbol during this time period.

The relationship between the segregation and the Confederate flag is clearly established whether or not Gov. Wallace was sincere about his position on it.
