Word For The Day, monday, 7/24/06

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
hoi polloi; n.
The common people; the masses.
Usage Note: Hoi polloi is a borrowing of the Greek phrase hoi polloi, consisting of hoi, meaning the and used before a plural, and polloi, the plural of polus, many. In Greek hoi polloi had a special sense, the greater number, the people, the commonalty, the masses. This phrase has generally expressed this meaning in English since its first recorded instance, in an 1837 work by James Fenimore Cooper. Hoi polloi is sometimes incorrectly used to mean the elite, possibly because it is reminiscent of high and mighty or because it sounds like hoity-toity. ·Since the Greek phrase includes an article, some critics have argued that the phrase the hoi polloi is redundant. But phrases borrowed from other languages are often reanalyzed in English as single words. For example, a number of Arabic noun phrases were borrowed into English as simple nouns. The Arabic element al- means the, and appears in English nouns such as alcohol and alchemy. Thus, since no one would consider a phrase such as the alcohol to be redundant, criticizing the hoi polloi on similar grounds seems pedantic.
Etymology: [Greek, the many : hoi, nominative pl. of ho, the; see so- in Indo-European Roots + polloi, nominative pl. of polus, many; see pel-1 in Indo-European Roots.]
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Practice makes perfect.....post on....
what is that some EMO troll???
He hangs with ELARRY and ESHEMP.
Hillary, the hoi polloi hoyden, is charging her hair stylist and makeup artist costs for media appearance preparation as media production expenses to her campaign. Methinks Hills Big Digs would be more appropriate.
And an XS HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the Mommy!
Thank you-and HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY!!!
Where are y'all going on vacation? Someplace with cooler weather?
I bought and put up a miniblind last week for the window in the master bedroom, and tossed the faux wood roll shade that was looking pretty tattered and faded. Today when I got home, the miniblind had been taken off it's brackets and laid carefully on the antique desk nearby. If the blind had fallen, it would have landed on the cedar chest I use for a window seat directly under the window. I put the blind back up on it's brackets while telling the spooks that I didn't buy it for them to play with and I wanted it left alone. I guess they don't like the miniblind, because they never bothered the roll shade that was there before.
Please excuse me for a while. We just ended a 22 hour power outage and I gotta go check the freezer and fridges for frost, flood and food damage.
I'm happy to report the 1Fro tamatas have done quite well in the heat wave and power outage. Nine days straight over 90, with 106 and 108 the past two days. THAT is very HOT STUFF in this town! (1Fro has Hot Tamatas!)
I deserve an extra blue gin and jazz tonight!
What a story, T5! They really did no destruction, just made your room the way they wanted it. I love it. Expensive for you, but a great story.
We've had three days of the hottest heat ever around here. Today I went out to run three small errands. I could only do two of them. 114 degrees with 53 percent dew point.
I can't complain too much because this heat is all over the country. We get two months, and it's over.
Your tamatas made it through that heat?

Or a very nice red wine...
Or better yet, dark chocolate...

But I went for the cute...let me know if you want to trade in the puppies for something else...(I know what every woman wants...)
I didn't want to touch that with a nineteen and a half foot pole.
I feel like I am cheating on my husband. I found a place on the net where I can watch FNC for free. I am somewhat violating our agreement whereby he doesn't have to pay for cable (and FNC) and subsequently sleep alone over policy disputes, and he can't support public television or NPR.
Lately, I've been getting my fix of conservatism through my employers RUSH24 account, and the Tony Snow pressers at whitehouse.gov...
but with this free fox feed, I feel conservatism oozing all over my life affirming, gun coveting, pro-Israel body!
i don't know how you do it,DG. i would be screaming out in a tourettes fashion constantly, if i lived with a lib. i have good lib friends and we coexist peacefully, and don't insult each other. i do know i could not LIVE with that. i am sure Dilbert has charms to compensate for his political wrongheadedness....
A+++ hoyden and harridan are both very good words. i think harridan is more suitable for the hildebeast though!
all of those are wonderful, but i will stick with the lowcal doggies : )
good luck to your niece!
that is unbelievably WEIRD! the faux wood shade was probably more familiar to them, they probably don't like change, it unsettles them. between your spooks and your neighboring dykes you are easily the most interesting student in this class, T5!!!!
nope. FL!
The pastor reminds us that John's gospel is NOT one of the synoptic gospels that use the word "miracle" to describe God's power. The word John uses is "sign." Everything Christ does is a signpost to God, pointing to something bigger than "power."
"Jesus wept" is the turning point of the Gospel. Not because Christ misses his friend, but because, all along the way, he has called his disciples with the words, "Come and see." and at this point, Martha, Lazarus' hard working sister, invites him to discipleship. "Come and see, Lord" she says. The pastor says, "Christ weeps because in that instance, he feels and hears His own call, to the tomb. This ends Christ public ministry."
I love my God. I love my husband. If I truly trust and believe, then I must trust my husband to lead our family. That doesn't mean that I don't have a voice, or that I can't make his life a living hell when I firmly believe he is wrong.
It means that I don't doubt my husbands love for our family, our country, our world. I do not doubt his motivation, only his means. Christ himself said, "Take this cup from me, but not my will."
I know I rag my husband from time to time, but I don't doubt that he loves me, loves our kids, loves our grandkids, loves the "us" more than himself.
Although an internet friendship can be a shallow means, I trust you enough to tell you truthfully, he is a gift to me. He keeps me humble.
