Power Mac G5 Reliability(not so good)
MacInTouch ^

Posted on 07/12/2006 6:20:19 AM PDT by Halfmanhalfamazing

the Power Mac G5's 17% first-year failure rate remains far higher than the industry average of 5% (see Gartner's recent report on PC hardware reliability, linked below). If Apple is to maintain its premium pricing, it should provide premium reliability. As things stand, high Power Mac prices must include high warranty service costs built-in.

With an overall failure rate of 23%, a quarter of which occur outside of Apple's 1-year warranty, and an average of 1.29 repairs per affected unit implying repeat problems, Power Macs are neither cheap for Apple to service after the sale, nor cheap for buyers. Power comes at a cost.

Gartner: PC hardware getting more reliable

Average hardware failure rate is 5-7%.

This is truely surprising, because I had figured it would be the other way around. Thankfully I build my own.

Just hmm.

Those poor Mac fanatics.

Maybe someone should make a TV commercial where that hip, twentysomething Apple kid approaches the conservative old PC guy (that's me) to ask him for help fixing the broken Mac.

I've had three G-5s for my business for little over a year without any problems. Started with one, bought two more. all are high end units. No problems with any of them.

I also have a single PC which I use just for Quick Books, as their is no Mac version as of yet. The PC has been fixed three times in the past year. It does burn CDs well, so fortunately, I have not lost anything.

Adding new software for the Mac is usually as easy as dragging a folder into the applications file. The PC makes me go through requests for notification of updates (usually telling me the software is out of date the moment I buy it.

MaximumPC (whose name implies some bias) attributes the overheating and failure of Macs to sloppy assembly -- specifically the overuse of thermal compound on the CPU heat sinks. They gave examples of two systems in their possession that were cured by redoing the heat sink compound.

Consider yourself lucky you didn't become a part of that 23%.

And the ease of installing software, I agree. It's almost as easy as installing software via Synaptic.(though right now I'm using Smart)

I haven't read maximumPC in a long time. Though the overheating issues with macs is the newer macintelosh line, not the "older" powermac line.

AFAIK.

But it does show a trend of sloppiness on their part.

Oh what the heck.

We haven't had a good Mac vs. PC war in awhile.

Intel chips seem to produce more heat and require more care in cooling design -- a trend they claim will be reversed.

But regardless of Intel's design efforts, the trend is to hotter and faster chips. Assembly will have to be improved.

The P4 series does.(pentium 4s are based on netburst)

I'm not so sure about those which belong to the centrino line. Those intel chips made it into laptops, PPC 970's didn't. AFAIK the current P6 architecture based chips are quite cooler than their PPC bretheren.

But even then, there are P4 laptops. No 970 laptops.(that I've seen)

All of the next generation Intel CPUs will be based on the mobile chip design. Favoring throughput instead of clock speed -- following AMD by some years.

"We haven't had a good Mac vs. PC war in awhile."

Not so. Just watch any Mac commercial. :)

Seriously, their advertising is aimed at elitist, hipster liberals. Zero facts included in the ad. Their ad simply infers thats Macs are cool and hip and easy but PCs aren't.

Hey Mac, if you want me to buy a computer from you, stop insulting me and actually tell me something about your freaking product!!

I've seen a lot of facts in the commercials.

My Macs have never locked up or needed rebooting (as seen on the commercials). My PC needs to be rebotted once or twice a week.

Well, yeah. Though that mobile chip design heralds back to the P3, P2, and ultimately P pro chip which was the original P6 core.

But I was merely responding to your heat issue/comment. While yes, P4s get extremely hot, you can cook an egg on them, the mobile chips don't so much.

And AFAIK, the centrino mobile chips are cooler than your equivalent powermac.

(You didn't specify, so I mentioned the IBM-PPC970/G5. The motorola 7450's/G4 might be cooler. I don't know)

Watch as the mac/pc argument changes to include linux. It's only a matter of time.

Yeah, the windows PCs at work are even worse. We have to reboot them daily.

If you weren't running Quickbooks, I'd say you need some http://www.opensuse.org

I love Quick Books. I love the fact that I can download my bank statements directly into the program and reconcile everything with my books. I love the fact that I can send my working data to my accountant each month, and he can check and correct anything necessary. Saves my hundreds from what I used to have.
