Well I see an email from you but the Lotus server seems to have gone down and I can't actually open it. Still here at work for another hour or so. The guys are picking me up to get me in trouble in about an hour and a half. So I guess I will talk to you tomorrow.

Would you take a look at the link I posted in #5238? The website has lots of "biological" information that I can't quite understand, except for the bottom line, which they say, indicates this AFA can help improve mental acuity, besides increasing the immune system, etc. Is it just another "snake oil" or could it have some value?

Here's my thinking - there are no magic bullets. A lot of these companies will latch onto a single study that shows the benefits of a single compound. More often than not, various vitamins and 'supplements' help each other work better. Focusing on just one at the exclusion of the others almost defeats the purpose. What they need to look for are the larger trends or groups of conditions that are benefitted by a group of compounds.

One pattern I've run across is a group of conditions helped by fish oils. Fish oils (cod liver oil, krill oil, salmon, etc) have lots of vitamin d which can moderate various psychiatric conditions and omega-3's which reduce "inflamation". Good for the heart, good for the joints, good for the brain. Deficiencies in Vitamin B's can cause neurological problems. (vitamin D and the B complex help each other out) Another trend is the effect of blood sugar and insulin swings. The more stable the better. This is an argument for low-glycemic eating.

So I guess my point is that no single supplement will replace a good diet and an active lifestyle, but it could be a part of a good diet and active lifestyle.

My FIL? Sits, watches golf and eats cookies ... all day.

Are there any "Seniors activities" of some sort in town or at church? Maybe hanging around the house all day with no adults to talk with is getting her all antsy.

Yeah, I'm sure that's part of it. But transportation is an issue. You'd think that her other in-town daughter would consider visiting, calling, bringing her over to the house to spend the day with the grandkids, but it never happens if we don't ask. And not always then.

We try to get her out to church on Sundays and Wednesdays, but sometimes she just won't go. We keep telling her that, as long as her hands are going to hurt, they might as well hurt at church. Doesn't always work.

Before this "spell" wife had pulled out some jigsaw puzzles. That seemed to get her interest. We've run through the ones we have tho. Need to get some more.

We were ~cruel~ at dinner. She hasn't been eating much since she took all the pain meds. We've told her she'd not stop feeling weak until she ate. Last night I grilled chicken and roasted vegetables. She had some chicken soup.

Tonight we added pasta to the chicken and vegetables. She said "I'll have this corn muffin and milk."

Wife said "not until you start with this."

It's a shame to have to treat a 76-year-old woman like that, but she's not going to gain any strength on milk and cornbread.

Is there a Dial-A-Ride program there? And would she be able to use it with her mobility problems?

Might be a way for her to get out of the house some of the time, without having to feel like she was being a burden.

Hmm...not familiar with Dial-A-Ride but I'll look into it.

I think it's called "Dial-A-Lift" here. Basically affiliated with the local bus system, usually, but they help folks with disabilities and don't require that you go to a particular stop. Not vey pricey, either.

I'm simplifying, of course, but...

Corin, these may seem to be non-sequitirs, but:
  1. How are her teeth?
  2. How're the pain meds treating her stomach?

Chicken soup, corn muffins, and milk sounds like a bland diet, Southern style.

Did she eat with good appetite, or just pick at the food? Do any of her current meds cause indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, sour stomach, gas, or bowel trouble?

Another good theory down the drain!! I appreciate your input and know you are correct in your assessment. So many of us are looking for that 'magic bullet' we tend to grasp at straws. Luckily, I will be able to assess pretty quickly whether this stuff works or not, and I'm not out that much if it doesn't. You'll have freepmail in a bit.

I do know this, human health is tied to the oceans. Every primitive foodway has sought foodstuffs from the oceans: fish, shellfish, sea 'vegetables', even sea salt. They are potent nutrition. So potent that some groups live off the sea exclusively. ie the Inuit. Our downfall is all the refined foods we eat. All the cod liver oil in the world won't make up for my FIL's cookie habit. I am very interested in what you find. The claim of better hair and nails is very tempting....

She's not interested in online life at all, is she? Seems like there could be some internet group out there that she would get along with and give her companionship at home.

It's hard for me to imagine your position since my family have never had to care for an aging relative. Seems doubly hard for you since you've still got boys you're raising.

I doubt she's ever used a typewriter. I'm sure she's never used a computer.

She lived on the farm and when her mom left the family, she was taken out of grade school and taught to cook for the men. She's educated herself fairly well. She reads a lot. And she's always had a lot of good common sense knowledge.

But, technology? Not now.

In another episode from the week she had to call and ask how to put the tape in the VCR. She's known now to do that ever since they created the things.
