If I remember correctly the police said those cases didn't match the MO of the Ramsey case and dismissed it. The investigator that eventually quit and investigated the case on his own showed similarities between other crimes in the area and the Ramsey case.
Take the hypothesis that the murderer was a pedophile in the Boulder area. We know from statistical information and interviews with convicted/admitted pedophiles that their crimes increase in severity as time goes by and they are not caught. I do not find it unreasonable to think that possibly a pedophile escalated his crime from sexual assault to murder.

A random pedophile who knew enough about the Ramseys to imitate their language and mannerisms in a ransom note, then use John's bonus stock amount, which no one else knew, as the ransom amount?
