2006 WORLD CUP - Day 15 Thread - Groups G and H conclude
MLSnet.com ^ | 6-23-06 | MLSnet.com

Spain will open the games, playing against Saudi Arabia in Kaiserslautern at 9:55 a.m. ET on ESPN and Ukraine will face Tunisia at the same time in Berlin (ESPN2).

Ukraine goes into the game against Tunisia knowing that it determines its own destiny. A victory will guarantee passage, but a draw could set up the possibility of another tie-breaking situation on goal difference. Tunisia, meanwhile, which hasn't won a World Cup game since its debut in 1978, has to defeat Ukraine and hope that Saudi Arabia does not defeat Spain by a large margin.

France will play against Togo in Cologne (2:55 p.m. ET, ESPN) without Zinedine Zidane, who is suspended for yellow card accumulation. 'Les Bleus' need a victory; any other result will put an end to their World Cup adventure. The 1998 champions were eliminated four years ago in the group stage, as well.

Switzerland and Korea lead the group with four points each and will face each other in Hannover (2:55 p.m. ET, ESPN2) knowing that a victory for either side will secure a spot in the Round of 16. A victory or a tie by Togo will guarantee both Switzerland and Korea a spot in the knockout phase.

So why don't they just go ahead and make them part of NATO?

The Israel team always has Israeli Arab players too, and the Persians don't like them either.

A potential double smackdown for Iran!

46'+ RED CARD JAZIRI Zeid (TUN)

Jaziri's second caution puts Tunisia down a man for the second half, as the first half expires.

One, until women are respected and given opportunity in the litter box - those countries will not advance.

Two, they will advance even faster with the toppling of corrupt leaders.

go Spain!

Not possible. The ruling class likes their strict adherence to Islam and Dutch hookers too much..

Pity that Sheva still doesn't look quite match-fit. He seems to be 'off' today, yet again.

Yes, could someone explain the preliminaries?

According to http://eur.i1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/i/eu/fifa/do/sloen.pdf

Europe gets 14 slots
S. America gets 4.5 slots
Oceania gets 0.5 slot
Africa gets 5 slots
N. America gets 3.5 slots
Asia gets 4.5 slots

Now there was a playoff between Australia and Uruguay before the tourney...and I assume one between a North American team and an Asian team as well. But for 2010, Australia is switching to Asia? (Will Oceania still get 0.5 slot? I would hope so.)

Also, I understand that the number of slots in the next tourney depends on how teams do this time...when Cameroon did so well back in '90, Africa got another slot for '94...

I see that Guyana, Surinam, and French Guiana (French Guiana is colored North America, but it is not listed as actually having a team) are considered "North America," while Kazakhstan (part is east of the Urals, so I'm OK with that), Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey (part is attached to mainland Europe, so I'm OK with that as well), Cyprus, as well as Israel are considered Europe as well.

54 mins: Ukraine make the first substitution with Andriy Vorobey replacing the ineffective Rebrov in midfield.

Tottenham Hotspur once paid eleven million pounds for Rebrov. Apparently he isn't any better now then he was then.

65' YELLOW CARD 6 RUSOL Andriy (UKR)

Rusol will miss the next match if Ukraine advances.

Sheva's not fit but just drew a penalty.
Unfortunately, it wasn't a penalty.

LOL poor Tunisia, Sheva trips himself and is gifted a goal.

A bad call no doubt but not determinative. Tunisia needs a win not a draw.

Sheva trips himself and is gifted a goal.

Par for the course from the FIFA refs so far, though.
