It turns out that Nifong' possibly learned his election trick from Stephens.

In 1993 Stephens under pressure for how the DA's office was being run and possibly that it did not go after white offenders as aggressively as black offenders. He decided not to run for reelection, but rather to run for an open judgeship. But on the way out the door, ie, as he was running Stephens prosecuted a white man for manslaughter of a black youth. Stephens even chose to prosecute the white guy and handed prosecuting the two surviving buglars to a special prosecutor, saying he would have conflict of interest prosectuting both Seagroves and his buglars.

The facts are that Michael Seagroves was home with his ill infant son in March 1993. Three yonng black men broke into Michael Seagroves' garage. Mr. Seagroves shot them killing one of them and wounding another.

The jury hung on the case. Stephens won his judgeship. The NC legislature passed a defense of domicile law. One site I have found said the NC Attorney General stepped in and prevented a second trial and the charges were dropped.

Wow! Thanks for more local color, so to speak. I so appreciate our NC posters. You all give the rest of us information that we couldn't get anywhere else.

That election trick is straight out of "Bonfire of the Vanities.: And how ironic that Wolfe should follow Bonfire with Charlotte Simmons less than two years ago. The man is truly prescient.

Thanks JLS. Now I know why Stephens name is so familiar to me. I followed that case closely when it happened. It should not have ever been in court. Now things are starting to be clearer. Nifong learned his lesson well on this by observing his mentor.

Oh no, this isn't good. I was hoping he would look at this case and see how wrong it is. I was hoping he would decide he didn't want to look bad in the history books and do the right thing and end this case. But it is looking like he is cut from the same cloth as Nifong and Hardin.

Effing bastards. Nifong is following in Stephens' shoes. Expect no justice or fair rulings from Stephens. I'd been willing to withhold judgment on him, but after reading your post I have no expectation of fairness or justice from him tomorrow or any other day in this case.
