The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Who me? Well........Don't tell anyone but you know those 3 holes on each side of the bit? I learned that the curb chain and the bit attach to the bottom and the reins clip to the top. You can make it work but horses aren't too happy when you put it in upside down, :')

It is difficult isn't it? It doesn't go on as smooth as the cloth halters and it's stiff. After I finally got the bit right then I attatched it to the wrong strap. Of course, I had spent a long time shortening it, trying to make the bit fit and had to loosen everything. Then some how I got the curb chain twisted and one buckle in and one out and had to redo that too. It took me, oh... about 2 hours:') Once you get it on though, it's nice and easier the next time. I hold the bit just like it's attatched to a briddle and keep it straight and steady while I attach. People had talked about putting it in their mouth being difficult at 1st but that wasn't a problem with me. All those straps, buckles, and clips getting sorted was my problem.

Ok, I found another site where I can upload videos without having to compress them.

Yes. I like to teach him simple tricks. He kisses me on cue, too.

I wore a fanny pack loaded with sugar cubes or horse cookies, whatever I had handy. Tickled his upper lip with my fingers and when he even remotely lifted his upper lip, I gave him a treat. I only worked on it for a few minutes a couple of times a week and it took me about 3 weeks. If I had of tried harder, worked longer, it wouldn't have taken nearly as long. Probably could have taught him in one day, but they get bored quickly.

I definitely created a monster. I can't even walk by him without him chasing me down with his lip curled up. He wants a treat and lets me know it!

...Is it possible to teach a horse to back up an piss on people on demand?

LOL!! I don't know about that, but I know that it is possible for a horse to know, whether through Devine Intervention or what ever, to know when it's time to $hit on somebody. I was pulling my 2-horse trailer, with Tennessee in it, across the dam and there was this goober in the car behind me who was really tailgating me. I wasn't about to go faster because the road across the dam is only 2 lanes and they're REAL narrow, so I just ignored it kept on moseying along at my same speed. But I happened to look back again in my side-view mirror and the goober had dropped WAY back and I wondered why, until I saw Tennessee's tail whipping in the breeze behind the trailer and figured it out. Hopefully he dropped his whole load right on their hood! LOL!

That is a neat place to upload videos. Is it like Snapfish where you pay a fee or what?

That seems a cool site! Cool to share videos. Have you belonged there long enough to know if they send you a lot of spam if you register there?

Good Morning all.

We had another big storm last night. I think that is about enough rain for now. Sun is out, but it seems a lot cooler.

Are you glad to be retired?

Sure am. So nice to not have to get up before the chickens and go to work. What kind of wood working does he do? Maybe he could pick up odd jobs from the neighborhood. If he is handy, there are always people looking for help around their homes.
