The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Since you're new here you may not know Rusty's history. He was "anadrotic" meaning, his sweat glands had shut down, do to poor care BEFORE I got him. He hunted water where ever he could find it when it was hot. I don't know how he knew when the hose was on but if it was and he could get to it this is what he did. The first summer I had him, before I figured out he had the problem, he use to try to climb in the soft sided swimming pool we had in the front yard. He would take hold of the edge with his teeth and pull it down, while trying to step over. After several years of good care, and me hosing him down numerous times thru the days of hot weather, his sweat gland came back to life, but never like they should have. When it was really hot, he panted like a dog which caused some permanent lung damage. The vet said it wasn't serious and he'd be OK, but he'd never make it in the sport I wanted to do, long distance. I sold him to a stable that gave lessons, and he was the lesson horse for a while, then that owner sold him to a lady who needed just an occasional pleasure horse. So it all worked out, but I really liked that horse. He had tons of personality.

It took me awhile, and I originally blamed my dog, for holes showing up in my hose.

That is funny. Poor dog probably knew all the time that it was that darn horse and could not tell you. No one can tellme horses are dumb beasts.

Well in my defense, my dog was bad to chew anything and everything when he was a pup. I'd have never believed a horse would do this until I saw him:)

That is quite a story, I am glad it all worked out for him.

Most horses seem that way but she was sick and congested about a year ago and I would clean the gunk. I guess it felt good because now she holds her head towards me and if she was a cat she would purr as I wash her face with a cloth.

Classic pictures :~D I love those. Closest I have to that is the pony having a bath and not liking the soap on her nose ;~)

This is Bay this afternoon.... taking his siesta in the lean-to.

And the Twitter kitten... laying in the shade of a potted plant :~D

With that mark on the side of her lip I think she looks like Cindy Crawford.

The eyes are more impressive than her nose. It's like she's looking directly at you and thinking nooooo,Hair".

She has beautiful eyes, which is often frustrating taking pictures of her, because if the flash goes off, they turn red.

The face is off limits when it comes to waching any of mine! Even Jake who loves to have the water hit is mouth hates his face to get wet.

With Bay, how well his face gets washed usually depends on who can get taller. Guess who usually wins :~D

I'll try to get a picture of Sarah Lee. She will drop her head down for me. The boy....the head goes up, I go on my toes and he eventually relaxes to an I can go up again real fast again if I have to stance.

That neck can only go up so high for so long and you can extend with your arm and toes probably 3 more feet:')

Hmmm..... Well forgive me Hair, but I ain't gonna put any bets on you. :-) You need to get a sprayer on the hose so that either way at least some of his face gets wet. (You have to win somehow)

Heh... oh I do have a sprayer on it. That gets the bottom of he jaw real good :~D

I didn't say his face didn't get wet, the question was how ~well~ it got washed :~D

The face that they make, and the way that they throw their head up and away, reminds of a face a toddler would make when he's trying to be spoon fed mashed peas, or some other horrific thing. :-) Mine used to screw his lips up real tight and make the funniest face.

We just had an "all brush" of the pets out on the lawn. With this heat, everyone is shedding in bushels.

Everyone gather round!

Cartman rubs the comb, rather than the comb rubbing him... (also pictured... Part of the pile of hair I pulled off Gidget)

Speaking of Gidget :~)
