The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh dear... sorry about the horse that had to be put down. Terrible loss. I carry Banamine in my kit too, never had to use it.

We don't ride a lot in the winter, you guys are die hards to go up in January! Our forest closes in winter, at least the trails do. Some of the die hards still go up and ride the logging roads.

Dissenters and conflicting agendas is apparently why we have two chapters here too. Makes it hard for those of us who just want to make friends that ride and get together once in awhile... I don't want to go to a meeting that's just bickering. The work parties are fun though, keep everyone focused on something important, right? :~)

This one is feral so it will take a while to get pics of him. Great pic of yours though.

He was a great momma to our kittens. Surprisingly so. He still lets the female cuddle, but he and the black male Pippin grumble and posture now and don't have that relationship anymore. You know how it goes... It ain't cool for two guys to cuddle. :~)

One of the main reasons to join is to support the political causes that come up, and to promote good shared uses in the state forests. Our local politic is really pretty good in capital forest now, the motorized ORVs have their own half of the mountain and we have ours, the local groups do a lot of good PR with hikers and bicyclists and it's a very friendly environment. But that takes work, and a lot of signs up reminding everyone who helps to maintain those trails for everyone.

Last year our winter project-approved by DNR was putting painted horse shoes up on the main trails at our campground, many side trails go of to nowhere so it was a great idea to get people from camp to trailhead etc.
We got them up last June, new DNR guys said 2 weeks later"take them all down,we don't want to look like we are benefiting horse people only" makes you want to pull your hair out sometimes.

Nice link with beautiful pictures. We don't have that kind of riding in Ohio! It is nice to be in a group with fellow horseman like that, although, you do run into those that like to start the crap. Every organization, I have ever been in always has a trouble maker or too. But, you do need to get involved with other horseman, to keep those trails open.

The seed is down. The spreader was too much of a pain trying to push it through the pot holes, so I got a bucket and just threw it by hand. Hopefully, it grows. The weed killer I used didn't do as good as job as I hoped. I might not have mixed it right. There were places pretty much dead, but others the weeds were just flourishing. :( I hope all this work was not in vain.

Good job on getting the seeding done! Hopefully it'll rain on it now and it'll all come up. I wouldn't worry about the weeds right now. You can spray some 24-D on them in the spring and get the jump on them that way.

...When you have a chance take some pics of them...

Already done that. I took these yesterday afternoon. They were playing chase with my riding crop...

Hey there Hair! Just catchin' up on the thread because I have some borrowed computer time. Turns out that I'll be able to finagle my way to a computer about once a week. I can't catch up on the thread too much, it's too much of a job, but I did follow the posts that you're looking at a new horse! How neat! Did you decide on him? Are you looking for a horse to let Bay retire?

He is all eyes isn't he!

We just got back from a little road trip to pick up a present for my dad... it took us through an area with lots of neat property we'd love to have, some of it with a terrific view of the next volcanic attraction :~)

Not really looking - just having horses recommended to me! I decided to pass on him I think, we just don't have room, and finances right now would make it tough to ~make~ room just yet.

I always cringe with annoyance (and I know you didn't mean it that way at all, this is just a pet peeve I have:), when people say things like "just a trail horse" or not good for anything but trails, etc....

If it makes you feel any better, Becky, I think that comments like that are assinine. One thing that I look for when I'm looking at horses, is wether or not they make good trail horses in addition to whatever I might want the horse for, because if they're level headed enough to do that, they're level headed enough to do anything else, and being a good trail horse contributes wonders to their personality and their ability to be handled and ridden. So that's my two cents. ;-)

Hey everyone. Been hanging out on FR because I can, and I thought that I would give you all (y'all?) an update. Turns out that I'm not going to Maine after all, but instead I'll be renting a room in a house a mile up the street from my barn. I'm really excited about that because it means that I can start going back and riding again. I miss horses so much that it's painful. I'm still working out the details, but I hope to get there within the next month or so. I'm still taking care of my grandfather... It's hard, but I really can't complain... I don't feel like I have the right to honestly. Mostly I'm just glad that I'm able to do it. In the meantime so that I can be available yet pay my bills, I've put in an application at a temp agency. So we'll see what happens. Things tend to fall into place when they should, and not before. I just have to keep remembering that! I'll use this darn degree eventually, come hell or high water!

I hope that everyone is doing well.

Hay Beaker, hang in there! Happy to hear about the arrangement to live near the barn, that will be a great release for you.

Have you thought about maybe utilizing your degree at the barn (for pay) or maybe working with nearby vets or the county Ag?
