This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Good morning:)
We have a crisp cool fall morning here. Heavy dew.
Julia is coming around 9:30 to ride this morning. I switched her from Tue. to Mon this week because Celia has a day off and is coming to ride tomorrow. I don't think Julia is ready to ride with Celia and I...and Celia has no compassion for slower, less confident riders:). and any way, gives me two days of riding with others rather then by myself.
So what kind of seed are you planting this time of year...I've been wondering if this would be a good time to sow fescue here....probably depends on how much rain we get...fescue grows pretty well here during the fall and winter...
Becky
If it's that wet and soft, maybe you don't need to drag it first. Just overseed the way it is!
Have fun riding! I still have not been on my new horse.
I just might do that today. It's pretty nice out and rain is predicted for the next couple of days. Then maybe, lime in the spring.
Our horses seem to have survived the night in the back forty... I'd think if they were going to have found enough apples to get sick, they'd have found them by now. They've totally plowed up the ground back there looking. They found some I'm sure. We raked up two cartfulls, but every time we dug around we'd find another one.
But they seem fine... So all's well that ends well in that regard. It was obvious last night that as much as we might think so, horses just aren't very smart. The new gate location really stumped them at dinner time. They stood down at the end by the old gate.
Today now I want to go spread poop in the big pasture, and let it rest awhile. If we get enough rain before the frost hits, it might actually turn green a little.
LOL, they do make you wonder sometime:). Their reactions to things can sometime indicate both ends of the spectrum, either real stupid or real smart...sometimes it's a toss up on which it is:)
I've got Harley saddled up and ready to go. I wanted his back to warm up a bit under the saddle before I set my rump on him:)... cool weather can sure change them. Julia just pulled up. See ya'll later.
Becky
Have a good ride :~)
Really? Ours natuarally that color:')
As someone who has boarded horses in the past, it does make a difference in the relationship if the owner never feeds. I did self care at a place with mine for awhile, and he was alone... And then switched to full care at another place. Instead of being the sole provider of everything, I became just the person who comes to make him work, and my trainer was the hero that fed him.
Yeah. She loves to eat so I figure if she realizes I control the pellets..... Good for me to. It will show if I can do this if I move them.
Good morning all.
Nice picture of Bay, what a pretty head.
At last it is cool, beautiful, crisp and clear here in the Hilll Country. Got an inch of rain yest. took some pics of the approaching storm, hope to have them developed tomorrow.
Lots to do today. Have to cut and trim cedar poles to make a top rain over the barbed wire, the horses are leaning on it as they bellow for their morning feed. Window screens, etc. So nice to sleep with the window open and that roaring air conditioner not on.
I think it's interesting about Harley's spot only involving the hair. Until you said that, I'd just assumed that it was a darkening of the skin, almost like a portwine birth mark. But then again, I've never known of one of them to change color. It almost sounds like the color changes that my roans go through, only just in one spot rather than all over. All my roans are darkening up right now, and it does seem to happen rather quickly. It seems that the white hairs shed out first, leaving the darker hairs. Then even more dark hair comes in with the winter coat, and the shoulders are darker than the rump. I think it is somehow effected by the temperature too. When we have cool springs like we had this year, the dark hair is slower to go away. So he must have something going on like that. Interesting!
It is nice isn't it? I went out in shorts and was wishing I had put jeans on. The horses are enjoying it too. All of them running and playing. It was strange though. I had to use fly spray. Tiny flies were all over her. They kept getting on me too. Usually they just go away but the fly spray was knocking them dead and they just fell off. I hadn't seen them before.
Well, I see you've decided to pass on the new horse. He was very nice looking and seemed to carry himself well in the pictures. He definately had the Standardbred head and neck, but I happen to like that look so he looked great to me. I couldn't see the videos but I read the other's commentaries about his gait. The overstride that somebody was talking about is a Standardbred thing too. It's a highly prized trait in the gaited horse world. It makes them smoother. It also sounded like he had a nice personality. But if you weren't ready, then it's just as well that you didn't let yourself get roped into it. You'll know when the time is right for Bay to retire. And don't worry about him when you do. It'll be easier for him than for you.
The wonky hind leg movement on the black horse sounds exactly like what Tennessee used to do when he was younger. His right hind foot would rotate counter-clockwise as his weight passed over it and the hock wobbled too. I tried all kinds of things to try to fix it with a shoe, to no avail, but now I know that it was caused by his leg not coming down out of his hip socket perpendicular to the ground. That leg wanted to land more to the inside, so when the farrier trimmed that foot to look like the other foot, the outside of that hoof was hitting the ground first and that was what was causing the problem. That foot needed to be trimmed so that the outside of that hoof was shorter than the inside, so that when the foot hit the ground, it hit the ground flat. Now that he's going barefoot and that foot can wear naturally, it self-levels, with a little help from me, and he doesn't have that problem any more.
So if you had been thinking about buying the new horse, that problem is definately fixable and shouldn't cause him any troubles down the road, as long as he's shod correctly and they don't try to force his bones do something that they're not really lined up to do.
I have to go take a nap. Somebody wake me up in an hour.
We've had those too! It seems like all of a sudden they're everywhere and they're annoying as heck. I think they're the same kind of flys that get all over the cows, but I don't know why there's suddenly so many of them. I think that it may have something to do with the cool spell and the flys are all swarming onto any warm body they can find, trying to stay warm, whereas during the warmer weather they would normally be off flying around and doing what ever it is that flys do. That's my all-knowing theory anyways! ;o)
I can probably agree that the wonky foot placement isn't the sole reason to turn him down. It might be fine his whole life. Like I said, Bay doesn't have great back legs, and they're the part of him that never gives me trouble :~)
He seems like a nice animal, good looking and nice temperament. I think the real reason is I don't have room.
