The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah, his winter coat is really pretty ugly, IMO, too faded and whitish looking, no gold at all.

Is the birth mark visible when he's in full coat? Is it just the skin that's dark, or the hair too? Are we just seeing it now because the summer coat has shed out and we're seeing through to his skin as the light winter coat comes in?

When she first posted the story I thought it might be a scam, but she never outright asked for money, people just started offering it. At that point, I thought, uh oh, not a good idea. But, the more I read, the more I started thinking that she was on the up and up. Still, I wouldn't send a total stranger money like that. She's a brand new member of that forum.

I don't like that Tom/geseppe guy. He's an arrogant jerk. No way am I getting involved with those whackjobs.

Full coat?? You mean when he has a full winter coat...I can't really remember, but I think it gets harder to see then again too. I just ran out and looked at it close...I'm surprised...it is the hair that turned anywhere from black to dark brown. The skin under it is the same as the skin under the rest of him, black...I never looked at it close, I thought it was the skin under that was different and not that the hair had changed.

How could hair change color, and change that quick....I could see new hair being a different color, but not hair starting out one color then changing...could he have shed that much hair and new come in that quick?

Well, that's even weirder if it's the hair. I thought it was just the skin showing through!

I don't know!

I looked thru some old pictures and this is the best I can do for the different seasons. The first is from May of 05. The darkness on his hips is what I picture as the smutty gene, so that IS probably what the spot on his shoulder is caused from, but it looks different to me, not a blending of dark and light but a SPOT:)

Next the best one I could find for a winter comparison. It's there but it isn't so visible as like right now. I found some others taken last year about this time and it looked like the one I took today.

But the one I took just in Aug, it doesn't show at all...really interesting.

LOL...he was very interested in what Mack was doing:)

Any way, I'll stop with his funny spot...it just sort of jumped out at me this evening. I hadn't noticed it at all and then wham, there it was.

I'll try not to bore you all with it again next year...LOL...I think I've talked about it every year when this happens...

I don't think I'd get on a ladder around Cyn... She'd push us over for sport :~)

Funny you said that. I was just loading up the rest of the pictures I took of him that day while Mack was working on that electric line running to the barn. I did have to chase him off a few times before Mack was done, because he was just getting to close and pushy with his nose, not only on the ladder but wiggling his lip on Macks pants:)

heh... You could have gotten on America's Funniest Home videos :~)

I just went out to check on the horses, see if they were still rooting for apples... they weren't. Bay came trotting to see me... looking spry :~)

Not sure why it looks foggy, it's not - had a light/lens thing happening that's kindof dreamy :~)

Is his skin all the same color? It could be that cold plays a part in it. Didn't Miss Targets used to have Siamese cats? Someone did and I think the color on their points is temp sensitive.

Nope, not app spots. Tuffy had black hair coming in like the fleabitten Arabs on his neck and chest (in the chestnut). I asked an appaloosa geneticist about it and she said LP gene does weird things. They have since gone away.

Yep, his skin color is black all over, as far as I can tell, except of course his white strip on his face and his two white socks.

I think you're right then that it has something to do with the temperatures. It wouldn't be feed since his feed doesn't vary from season to season. (He is such a good looking boy)

Good Morning.

Hair, it looked like you had a really nice day for your "project". Looks good! The weather here has sure messed me up on mine. I still need to lay the seed down. There is no way, I will be able to drag it a bit before I seed. The tractor would get stuck for sure.
