The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Wow, great pictures. Your' trails look as nice as Hair's, so smooth. Everything around here is just so rock, or lots of low branches to duck...

...you probably ought to have been icing it yesterday instead of riding. What fun is that, right?

LOL! Yeah, that's what my husband was saying. He said if I had been planning on doing anything other than riding when it happened that I'd've been layed up on the couch whining for him to bring me fresh ice packs and something to eat. LOL! And you know what...he's absolutely right! ;o) Hey, there's nuthin wrong with playing the cards you're dealt to the fullest, right? ;o)

Was that like a really bad pun or what? ;o)

LOL,, wouldn't that be a hoot:) Talk abut fireworks...which by the way, they did have fireworks this year, Sat night, before the street dance started. They were pretty good, and lasted about 30 minutes. This was a first for the festival. Kind of made up for the pitiful parade.

I had to run to town this morning to get horse feed...I couldn't believe it Sat night, I realized I had forgotten to buy feed, yikes. I had just enough to get them thru Sun. but nothing this morning. Anyway, while I was in town getting my feed the talk at the feed store was the pitiful parade....going to be repercussions for that one.

Well those pictures must be deceiving, coz they sure as heck weren't smooth yesterday. They were either full of rocks or full of mud. They had gone over most of the trail with a bobcat fairly recently and moved a lot of the fallen logs and big washed out rocks out of the way, but that just left the loose dirt, and it apparently came a pretty good downpour out there on Saturday afternoon, so it was pretty sloppy in a lot of places. But to their credit, they did manage to get rid of a lot of the big suck mud pits by dozing it out and cutting drainage chutes across them.

Your humidity is a lot higher than mine - that has to make 90 degrees miserable. Hosing off the roof of your house will lower the inside temps and putting a bowl of ice in front of a fan will help also. Tricks I learned in the south.

Triple digits here again today. I really feel for the horseshoer but hopefully he'll be done before the worst of the heat hits us. I'm at work so I'll be in air conditioning all day.

Oh we had our share of rocks! We were to busy holding on with both hands to take pictures. Lots of solid rock on parts of the trail as well as larger rocks loose on the hills.

Yeh, I guess as long as nothing gets broken that's life around horses. I can't count the number of times I've wrapped a wrist or finger in vet wrap and continued with whatever.

What did you do to your ankle?

I was a clutz. I was stepping down out of the tack room at the barn and had a saddle under my right arm and my left ankle just flipped over on me...on flat ground! So I'm stumbling and trying to recover but the saddle is too heavy so I finally pitch it, but still end up crashing into the hay bales on the opposite side of the barn. I could tell that I'd sprained it bad coz I heard it pop when it flipped, plus it took my breath away for about 5 minutes. But after that it was fine, more or less, so I went on. We've all got our priorities, ya know.

I can see on some of the pics that the trails are nice and smooth in places... But I also see a lot of tough obstacles, down the hill, and the fallen trees. In our woods, the prison crews would have smoothed out and graveled those, and they go through the mud holes and add drainage underneath, bridges and culverts, and lots of rock and gravel :~D It's nice, when there's a correctional facility in the forest and a lot of cheap labor! That's why we have all the nicely over-maintained trails, it wouldn't be that way naturally.

The Backcountry Horsemen chapters also each adopt trails and go through in the spring cutting back brush and doing lighter maintenance. ecurbh and I will get around to joining one of those eventually.

I have done that just walking in the yard! The dogs are always after moles so the yard can be pretty trecherous and I twisted mine bad, I actually thought I broke it. That was a couple years ago and it still bothers me occassionally.

Our prisoners work the roads on the chain gangs still here! LOL. I wish they would clean up some of the trails or make new ones. The obstacles are rather challenging at times but makes for a good ride. Never a dull moment that is for sure!

It does make for a good ride to have a few of those challenges left on the trail, you get a better appreciation of what the horse and rider can actually do.

This is the little cross fence project that I we put in on Saturday...

I bought about 10 of those little fiberglass, step-in posts and one 650' roll of the fiberglass rope with copper wires in it and we used the solar charger that we already had. It was only about 100' from the corner of the barn to the perimeter fence so that's why there's so many strands. We really didn't want to cut it, in case we needed to use it somewhere else sometime, so we just went back and forth with it until we used the whole spool. The charger was meant for 25 miles of fence, so it's a bit of an overkill, but it's very effective. Lee said that he thought he could see a corona around it. ;o) Poor little Ellie found out how strong it was with the tip of her nose, right off the bat. I thought she was going to flip over backwards.

Oh, and I found out how the water in the trough was getting so muddy...

Apparently Hope and Ellie like to use it for a foot bath!

You need to buy them a wading pool like I have for the dogs, maybe the larger sized one though.
