The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Just wondering. Would your friend let you borrow him on a trial period to see if you could "fix him". I know this is no reason to buy a horse but if he's not ok, I would rather see him with yall than sold to someone else. I guess I like projects:')

My farrier noticed he was a little wonky back there and I know he and Bob talked about it, but I'm not sure he addressed it at all in the trim or the shoe. My farrier is the best of the local farriers I've ever used, but doesn't necessarily do a lot of observing of movement or correcting as part of his trim job, other than watching them walk away while I get the next horse :~)

It's something interesting to have my vet look at, if I decide I really even want to make room for another horse... Which is a big if :~D

You're right, he's a really dark bay. Lots of brown highlights in the sun.

He has an efficient, if rather plain movement to him. He's not a fancy mover, doesn't have nearly the suspension Bay has, for example, but I bet he's considerably easier to sit than Bay is, because of it.

His friendliness is a lot like Bay... when you come out to the gate, he wants to be around you.

I'm considering him, but he didn't take my breath away like I feared he might if he'd been this great black studly thing with all kinds of presence. He just seems ~nice~. I'm surprised Bob thinks he's too hot for him. Maybe Bob ran him around all morning or something so he'd be quiet :~)

He probably would. He's just selling for another owner, but if I wanted to have it seriously looked at, I could.

Oh - and yes, his head is more Saddlebred than Arab. Chiseled, but a little blocky.

I agree, that's not an Arab head - he looks like an Arab when he canters, though.

He's 1/4 saddlebred, 3/4 Arab... and a little Saddlebred goes a long way on head shape. The mare I had in high school was that mix, and she had a big head.

I loaded the walk video while I went and watched a show:) I've been looking at it.....HHHMMMMMMMMM....did you look close at that foot....it almost looks like it is not trimmed level....but it could be because the white sock is lower on the outside then inside....just hard to tell.

I don't know, you don't sound enthusiastic enough about him to me...

Of course riding him would help you know for certain...sometimes that changes everything.

Nicely shaped head though.

The skinny old T'bred I rode while I was in law school back in the late 70s had a similar head -- here she is ramping and stamping above the bit because she just saw the first fence on the course --

RIP Bella, you were a mean old girl but you taught me a lot.

I can't download the videos (of course on this slow dial up at home) but I don't like what you are describing with the rear leg.

JMHO - since he didn't take your breath away, don't get him. At 5yrs old, you'll spend the next 20 years worrying yourself sick over his gaits, corrective shoeing, training and stress. If he took your breath away it would be different :) This is not the one for you.

If I won a horse lottery :)

Hopefully it wouldn't include more horses. I'd build a new barn, send a bunch of horses off to trainers to be campaigned in Appaloosa shows. Put in automatic waterers. Hire someone to take care of the ones left here and exercise them so Bob and I could do some traveling. Buy a new aluminum horse trailer with living quarters.

Fancy is 1/4 Saddlebred and you can sure see it in her head. Of course, you can also see it in her gaits.

Thanks. Just doesn't sound like this is the one. No trying to figure out how to rationalize yet another horse :)
