The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, it was dry... honey brought water and we had to fill it... so it is leaking. Maybe just a hose, maybe the radiator. Radiators can be a few hundred dollar $$$$ thing right? Been awhile since I've had to do that.

Having just been through the radiator thing last month when Blade and I were stranded I know the radiator itself was not all that expensive. $69.00. And when I watched it was pretty easy to drop into the old Chevy Silverado we have. If you have to pay for labor that will be the killer. Could also abe a freeze plug, we blew one of those out to as well as the cracked radiator and the serpentine belt needed replaced. Luckily my daughters boyfriend, bless his heart came up and fixed it for us.

Oh, and I need to add...this is the first time Mack's fix failed me. And now that it has failed again, I think there is something else going on with this tire.

That's a pretty good idea, Becky :~)

Following Okie would be a great start for SL.

And even following the TW that kicks isn't ~bad~ if she'll slow him down. You just have to give her a little room... 10 feet, so he doesn't feel like he has to threaten. I don't get the feeling the area you ride in is so thick or narrow that you'd ever have to crowd.

I would want the floor jack too. I hate the dumb little jacks that come with the vehicle! We have a ramp dealy you drive up on to change trailer tires... have tried those? I'd probably unload the horses to use it, just because I think the trailer would be sitting pretty crooked when it's up on it and I don't think they'd like that.

Yeah, I've seen those used. I guess it would depend on where you're at, but if I was out on a road, I would not unload the horses...It won't kill them to stand on an angle for a little while...

Do you think Okie would have a problem with the beach? Has he been spooky for you all?

There was a foal out there that looked like Okie. Kind of stood out becaue it didn't look anything like the mare or other horses.

Okie is a looker:)

I remember when I was thinking of buying him, way before you did, I thought "now at a trail ride, I'm going to have to do things extra good, because they are really going to be looking at us since he is so flashy" :)....flashy horses can have a negative effect too:), people watch to close...I like blending in to the back ground.

I know how that goes, we defintely are not mechanically inclined but all Lee had to do was unscrew a coupon of screws and remove two hoses from the radiator and the old came right out and the new slipped right in. I thought "man! I could a done that instead of sitting int he hot sun with a very frustrated 4 year old horse crying my eyes out!" LOL. It makes you wonder how securly those things are after see how it popped right out.

LOL. Celia and I were cussing the guy that put the tire back on my trailer on Fri. (he did it with an impact wrench)...We could budge the lug nuts. Even the police man that stopped and helped had trouble. Celia held the iron while he jumped on it with a foot to break it loose.

I don't know. I haven't tried yet. We were going to take them both but then my husband started having job problems and since they follow each other and are bonded we figured if one spooked the other would. It would be good if Eddie and I could ride them both together though at our pace.

Oh, I knew you hadn't tried yet...I was just wondering if you considered him a spooky horse? He never spooked at anything around here, but around here was similar to what he was use too:), I don't have oceans around:).

I thought you might have been able to guess at what his reactions would be...you can't know for sure tho, till your there:\

It's hard to tell. I would have thought SL would have done better. He likes things familiar and if she goes first and it doesn't get her he's usually ok. HOWEVER, one day we were riding around the round pen. They have done it many of times. It's about 10 feet from the back rail to the gelding pasture. He balked for some reason. Eddie just kept him looking at it. I asked if he wanted me to go 1st and he said..well never mind what he said but they just stood there. Nothing happening so I went on thru. She got about 5 feet in and threw a fit and started turning and backing almost put us in the fence. After she was out it was like nothing happening. Eddie nudged Okie and he went right on in. We followed and what set her off the 1st time was not a problem anymore. Go figure. So you never can tell. All you can depend on is that all horses are gonna spook and you never know about what, or when,I guess.
