The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

He's got to finish this bathroom 1st though (AC working right now so I can be sassy:') He has the plumbing done. I told you he would do it. He cussed all weekend about he was afraid he didn't have something called a "pee trap". Seems we do have one after all though.

Really? Thanks! I thought the gray horse was really well built and fancy-looking. When I saw him, I was thinking of all the magnificent names he should have: Gray Ghost, Thunder, Storm, anything that would match his looks. His actual name? Fred.

Fred? That's cute. I wonder if there is a Barney or Wilma around his place.

I love his coloring. The heartbreak of dapple greys is they don't stay that way, he'll get lighter every year. I will say Tuffy actually looks more comfortable on his feet.

I don't know what the situation is on the grey horse, whether he's sound or not, I might be way off base. To me, grey horse looks to me like he doesn't have enough leg or foot for his body, and something about the way he's standing and his expression says his front feet hurt. I think he looks tense in his undercarriage... like he's attempting to arch his back and lift his shouldder to get the weight off them. He looks like Bay looks when he's doing what I call 'toe pointing' when decide to go give him Bute. Anyone else see it?

LOL! At least he can do it himself. That is more than I can say about myself.

I didn't know what I was seeing but yeah, his color is pretty but he looked uncomfortable. His legs looked off to me like the front were too short. Tuffy just looks like "what's going on here".

He had to call around asking people stuff. I'm just glad he didn't start busting concrete up. He was talking about that at first.

If he comes home with an industrial air compressor and a jack hammer, that concrete will be history....... : )

He has an air compressor that would make most men cry. No jack hammer though (I think)

A large air compressor is what I want. I have an impact wrench that uses 1" sockets. It is too heavy for me to pick up now.

Tuffy may come back and say "The horse was just fine, you're seeing things!" but until then I'll keep going out on a limb and show everyone what I was seeing.

Before I do this, I realize one shouldn't read a whole lot into one photograph, any horse can get caught in an awkward pose... but here's what I see.

The first thing I saw was that muscle in his abdomen. He's lifting his back. It's normal to see this if the horse were more alert, on the muscle, or collected. A collected horse uses this muscle to lift his back, lighten his front end and carry himself on the rear. But the tenseness of that muscle does not go with his general expression. It should be relaxed if he were as 'bored' as his expression shows. He's sucking up and arching his back like something hurts.

He's also lifting at the shoulder. I don't think his shoulder is in it's relaxed position. I think he's shrugged it up, and that's further confirmed because his elbow is straight. It's touching the ground but there's no weight on it... So I think at ~least~ his left front hurts... and I notice, that leg/foot is the only one that's not wrapped in some way. So I don't know what's going on with that horse. What I see in Bay when he does this, is he alternates which one he's resting. The black vertical line shows where his leg would be if he were comfortable standing on it.

Some of them are heavy, aren't they? He was on the ladder and asked me to hand him his air gun. It was a struggle to lift it over my head. If they don't already, I bet someone could make a fortune with modified tools. The same tool causes my husband a lot of arm/shoulder pain.

"The same tool causes my husband a lot of arm/shoulder pain."

Does that cause bursitis later?

Maybe. More like "ageititis probably though. After a day or so of rest after overdoing it, he's ok til the next time. He has grown sons to help but prefers to work alone.

Just talked to someone that has priced the Mitsubishi Mr Slim AC system. He says it was pricey and you can buy two regular AC systems for the price of the Mr Slim unit. Still, he is more impressed with the Mr Slim unit.

You can't see it very well in that picture, unless you look verrrry closely, but he has bandages on his hock area, both legs, and bandages on the front pasterns. He was injected in all those joints, plus he has the broken back hoof pastern axis on one foot, not to mention navicular issues. That horse had more problems than tuffy does, if you can believe it. He's going to take a ton of management and money to keep even remotely comfortable. And to make matters worse, he's only 6 years old. She said she uses him for english, western, jumping, dressage, you name it. Maybe they just ran him into the ground.

And yes, you're right, he does look uncomfortable in that picture.

I think you're exactly right in your assessment, the only thing you didn't think of was why he looks bored. They drugged him a little to calm him down.

The horse definitely has more problems than you can shake a stick at.
