This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I think the horse was from Missouri. Another article, that I cannot find now, had more details.
Have any of you seen that new bedding that is little pine pellets? Similar to Feline Pines. It is suppose to last a lot longer than shavings and more absorbent. We bought some and are going to try in one stall. Sort of expensive at $5.50/bag at Tractor Supply. 5-6 bags in a 10 x 12 stall.
Good morning! Not sure on the brand, but some people here have been using some kind of pellet, I think it's pellet stove fuel. Bob likes it... said when they pee the little pellets expand and absorb it, but the dry pellets are small and not picked up in the manure fork.
That sounds really expensive though.
Sort of like clumping cat litter. The instuctions say to mist the pellets down a little, to soften them up. Yes, it is expensive, but if they last for months, it will be worth it. You just have to keep it picked out, then refresh with a bag or two.
Except for me :(
We do have tstorms in the forecast starting Sunday night. I need a 3-day gully washer just to begin to catch up!
Seriously? I caught rain all the way to Austin and it still looked north.
I don't see how they'd last for months if horses are stalled much, unless it's a really tidy horse :~) Let us know. :~)
It's about stall-cleaning season again for us after being off all summer. :~\
Are you talking about the Equine Fresh (???) stuff that TSC sells? If so, I use it. I like it very much. The stalls stay cleaner with less ammonia smell from the urine and less urine gets down into the stall floor. Although I use mats. some urine stills runs through, but this stuff mostly soaks up all the urine. I don't have to pull mats and treat with lime as often.
I do mix some regular shavings in for fluffiness and the nice, fresh shaving smell. The shavings also help keep the dust down as that is the only down side to the pellets. They do tend to be dustier than shavings. It doesn't really clump up, but instead breaks down into a fine substance as it soaks up liquid. If you spread the wet parts out, it will dry out and go to work again soaking up urine. I remove the dark reddish parts as they have already soaked up all they can.
Good morning.
The guy at my feed store told me about something like that. It's suppose to really help with ammonia smells.

It does last a long time. You remove the used up portions when they turn dark reddish and then add a fresh bag when needed. It is more expensive in the short-term because you have to fill up the stall but over time, it is actually cheaper. I end up using less than half as much on an on-going basis than shavings. The shavings at TSC run between 3.98 and 4.40 a bag here and I use 4 bags a week or so depending on how much time they spend inside. My horses are not stalled but can go in and out unless we get a gully washer or thunderstorms. I only use 1 to 2 bags of Equine Fresh a week.
It does. I noticed a huge difference in the ammonia smell in the morning. If you start to smell urine, you probably have some bedding that can't soak up anymore and needs to be removed.
Got to run to class. I'll check in later this afternoon.
Oh. That's too bad. I was headed to Waco but I was worn out from driving thru it and stopped in Austin.
And you would have, trust me!
Well, I'm still going to avoid it then!
I'm beginning to think we have the same thing... watching the local news, and it's raining everywhere around us, wet roads that are slick causing traffic problems, live cams showing pouring rain, and it's still just dry blowing dust here.
Our weather here is just about perfect:). Cool mornings, and warm afternoons. I'm going to try to ride today sometime, just a short one anyway.
Becky
