The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I've wondered if just giving it for the weekend of the ride would benefit him...I never got a satisfactory answer when asking, how long it takes for them to metabolize it into energy. I didn't know if I gave it to him just at the ride if he'd benefit then, or not till the next week:)

Do you know?

Oh, and I meant to add, I wouldn't up her feed if it was me.

Pleasure rides are usually not hard rides. She will do fine like she is.

JMO:)

The rep at the program I went to said that the names on a lot of the new supplements are misleading. I think the one that was named Mare and Foal or something like that was actually a good feed for other needs...He thought they needed to rename them:)

Anyway, that was why I mentioned to Hair to ask about the different ones before buying any. Amplify may be a good one for Bay, it sure increases energy:), but there may be a better one. She needs to tell them all the specifics about him and what she wants to do with him, before buying one, IMO:)

I've heard of giving mare and foal to increase weight and condition on horses that were just looking thin.

I guess it's a question I'd have to ask the vet when I've been able to look at the numbers on them. And at least at the moment, he could use more fat, but I don't want to founder Bay by giving him anything that's too rich. I just liked the idea of checking it out after your experience.

I missed the post about the possible beach trip first time around :~)

It's a lot of work (and a lot of weight) to haul water, but I've got a big barrel with a tap on it too.

I'd bring plenty of hay to keep her munching on something while she's just standing around tied, get a hay net and hang it high and secure... no need to increase grain.

JMO, of course, but I think the people at Purina would be a better source to ask then the vet. You should try to find out if there is one of these Purina seminars in your area. They are really very informative about feeds. If you can't find a seminar, I'd bet there is somewhere on line on their web site where you could send an e-mail to get some specific info on what you need. I "think" I remember there was a supplement for older horses....not sure tho.

You're probably right about the Purina folk being better than the vet for this kind of info... My vet thinks most of the supplements are just "expensive pee" :~)

I think vitamin supplements do that:).

Here is a link to send Purina an e-mail with questions. If you send one let me know, I'd be interested to see what they say. You might ask too when/where one of their seminars are that is close to you. They are really worth going too.

What did the horse look like?"

Here is a picture from my cell phone. I was to far away and I did not want to appear to be staulking him

I've got to catch up on my reading. 9/11 had me preoccupied with things other than horsey stuff. Lotsa pics and posts to go through. Still on a holding pattern with Deuce. Hopefully will have info on the laser repair tomorrow.

Wanted to share this link with everyone. It's on a forum specific to Arabians but it's a great rescue story. Our breed organization is very lacking in this regard, but there are some great people out there who are trying to help.

So sorry to hear about the turn in your job. I worked from home for years and understand the convenience is worth a lack of salary. Now I work in an office setting (IT dept) and we've got new mgmt for the department and I just want to drink large amounts when I get home.

I'm running nonstop today but wanted ya'll to know that I uploaded another video on my youtube site. A little airplane ran out of gas right by my house and landed on the freeway. My husband got there in time to see all the goings on. The cops stopped traffic on the freeway while they waited for the gas truck. As soon as the pilot got refueled, he used the freeway for a runway. That's my husband talking on the video, he's also a pilot but hasn't flown in many years.

Thanks... And my condolences for the continued wait on Deuce, and for the current job stress.

I have been in really good jobs, and really bad jobs, and it's never the work that makes the difference, it's always the people.

I just did now, I hadn't before... the cutesy narration doesn't really sit well with me! I'd be surprised if some of those people, and one of the horses, weren't really hurt.

Try this video on barrel racing:

Hey I had a horse come up on me and almost went over on top of me like that last one and I got 3 broken ribs! I can only imagine what happened to her! OUCH! And that girl on the white horse! Can we say broken nose?
