The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Thanks:)

I truly was not expecting 1st. I didn't place at all in horsemanship. I knew that my observations were sloppy...I just get in a hurry in front of judges. It was all simple stuff we do all the time, so I knew I was screwed there, but Harley did his part very well, and NO SORE BACK:)

He lost 1 point today on capillary refill time, he lost 1 point for taking a step at a judged mount, and he lost .5 point for slightly rushing on an uphill, downhill ditch crossing.

I finished in horsemanship with 93.5 points. The points I lost I pretty much knew was coming, in fact I expected a lot worse...a few things I actually did better according to the judge then I thought I did.

Yeah, and he is a farrier that I wished lived around here...I'd use him in a heart beat...In fact he was the groom of the wedding:)

Boy, I'm glad there was a farrier there. And very good thing Harley didn't come up lame.

63 riders is a lot isn't it? Where/what was the ride? Maybe parts of the course are on line like the Tevis. Or will be on the organizations website later.

You're points are outstanding too. So how did the Arab riders take a Quarter Horse beating them :)

OK...

Horsemanship judge: on check during the lunge, he didn't whoa at the first command, took twice each direction, and then when I was reeling him in my line touched the ground...

Sat. she watched us go down a switch back. Looking for a balanced seat, good control. I lost .5 for lightly forward legs.

Both she and the vet judge watched us step over about 4 logs, that were different heights. Harley got a good on that I lost .5 for late transition out of the saddle when going over the log.

They both watched us do a back up, Harley got a good again, but I lost .5 for not settling the horse well enough before backing.

The vet watched us step over another log with the front feet, stop and count to three. Harley got an excellent

Then there was a judged mount, and in hand trot out on trail, and a trot by to check lameness on horses, and balance on riders. We did fine with all that.

The ride was at Robbers Cave State Park, by Wilburton Ok.

The Organization is NATRC..North American Trail Riders Conference.

They usually have a 60 rider limit per ride...it's really about all a judge can fairly judge...By the end of this ride I know for sure of about 4 that pulled out, after yesterday.

I thought for sure we were sunk when I realized he'd lost that shoe...I don't think it was off that long...it couldn't have been. With all the rock there he'd have really tore his foot up...The vet said today, he saw a lot of lame horses today.

Terrific :~)

Very interesting!

So, do you get a ribbon or a trophy or something? Can we at least have pictures of that? :~D

It sounds pretty tough - tougher than endurance rides by a long shot I think. No one judges the rider on endurance and the obstacles you might run into are just something to get over/around however you can.

How can you stop your legs from being slightly forward going down a hill?

It's kind of funny, this ride was also a sanctioned AHA ride...Some of the riders were competing in two different competitions. The Arab Horse something, and the NATRC ride. They gave the Arab awards out first, and the lady was up there saying how the Arabs had really been cleaning up this year in the sport, and blah, blah, blah....(nothing against arabs you understand, just the attitude of a lot of the Arab riders in this particular group)...3 Quarter horses placed 1st in different divisions:)....

His P&R's were better then a lot of the ARabs there...I was asking:)...because I heard it again, how QH's just are to bulky to cool down well. His counts were 8/5, 7/5, 11/5, 10/8:)

LOL - I love that. Yes, no offense Hair, but Arab riders on endurance are a snotty lot too.

I found that QH, apps and mustangs consistently had better P&R's. They seem to know how to conserve their energy or rest when they have the chance or something.

When going down a hill you are suppose to keep your legs under you, not lean back like the man from Snowy River...

It's one of those things I've gotten sloppy about the last few years..

Ooops - I do a good imatation of him when I go down steep hills. I always thought you wanted to shift your weight to the rear end of the horse going down and to the front end going up.

I'd be a total wash out at one of these.

We had several apps there this weekend. One, named Buckshot:), got loose and went running thru camp. When he hit the asphalt road he slipped and fell and got a bad case of road rash:(...It wasn't serious really, but bad enough the rider had to pull...

We also had a girl there, (next door to us, yikes) with a QH stud. Impressive bred. He got loose today, and went charging over to a little pony mare....luckily nothing happend (excpet very heated words between the mares owner and the stud's owner), but it wasn't for lack of trying on the studs part....very scary.

That is very frightening. Any loose horse is worrisome for fear they will get hurt but a stud loose is scarey.

Good to hear the appy was okay. Probably will be sore and stiff for a few days though.

Get some rest :)

I'm going to go watch "The Path to 9-11"

Congratulations to you and to Harley. You both did great, especially with 60 riders. Very tough competition.
