The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

OOut of focus because I cropped the original.

Ah - I can see though, not an easy horse to groom for show! :~) Is he paint or an Arab cross pinto?

I don't know what his breeding is, although pretty sure no arab. His head is okay but a little coarser than anything I've seen with Arab breeding. Probably a Paint or Pinto that someone paid a fortune for because of his medicine hat coloring.

Here's one scene from here this morning... Bay is pissed that ecurbh has filled the hay cart and appears to be just walking away. :~)

You can see we were all fogged in this morning... Starting to get real cool at night.

And here's poor Cyn... She has finished her little bit of grain (she's still on a diet), and we ran her off of stealing from the pony, so she's gonna try her luck at getting Bay's grain ;~)

Well, maybe he's a mutt :~) It's difficult to tell from either picture and the way she has him set up. He seems more upright than a stock horse type, and has a rather Arab butt. Looks like a good type to be going English though.

Poor Bay :) Why is Cyn on a diet? She doesn't look fat to me.

We're starting to get pretty cool nights now too, and the feel of fall in the air.

Yes, he's ridden English.

She was getting fat, she had a distinct jiggle layer all over when she ran :~) (like I should talk). She's getting down now where we've brought her back up a little, but she still finishes first.

She looks really good in the picture above. I admit though I like halter weight on horses. I cring when I look at endurance horses, they are lean, mean, running machines but they all look hungry to me :)

Yeah. The hand part thru me. I was thinking surly they aren't galloping on a line.

Thanks :~) she does look good, I'd rather have her where she is now than the bony thing she was when we bought her. But now that her weight's up, she's proving to be an easy keeper. I just increased Bay's grain a little because he's been losing weight on this local hay. I don't think there's much nutrition in it and I'll be glad when it's gone and we can get some better. Pony gets just half a small (one pound) coffee can of grain, Cyn we just brought back to one full can, and Bay's now getting two cans. The grain we're feeding now is one part senior feed, two parts COB, all mixed together. We usually bump it up to two parts senior to one part COB for winter.

:) Strange term isn't it? It's really just, walk, trot, canter, gallop. Never have had a judge call for that before.

Are you feeding equine senior? We are feeding Strategy and oats to everyone but Prez and Sonny. They get Equine Senior. Everyone here though is on alfalfa hay and it has a good bit of protein.

Not sure how strategy compares... yes, it's a complete equine senior... at the moment it's the Purina brand, we switched to that with our recent feed store switch.

Bay's never needed the straight senior, and the other two certainly don't, so I've always cut it with a varying amounts of COB and fed the same mix to all three. They just get grass hay with it.

Strategy has two different protein counts. One is 11% and one is 14%, based on whether or not you feed alfalfa or hay. I can't remember what the count is in Senior, but it's a very good feed.

'hand' just implies that it is controlled, and not a full out run full speed. :~)

But it should switch from a three-beat canter with no moment of suspension (all feet off the ground) to a two-beat gallop with a moment of suspension.

In my experience it's more commonly asked for in English and Hunter classes than in Western Pleasure.

This senior is 14 % protein - and probably a higher fat content than their regular feeds.

I love the way you explain things so easily :)

14% is good.

Well, but sometimes when I explain things easily, I'm wrong :~D

The canter is a three beat rhythm, but I started to doubt myself on gallop and looked it up. They're saying the gallop is a four beat rhythm, not a two. But because the moment of suspension is longer the faster it goes, the faster it is, the closer the beats are to ~sounding~ like one.

IOW, it's not ba-bump... ba-bump, it's ba-ba-ba-bump... ba-ba-ba-bump. ;~)

Gallop:
