The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

My Lord, those are poor pitiful horsies! They've gone past losing fat and have lost serious muscle mass. Just starvation.

What was their former owner thinking?

We are cooking out this afternoon (or evening) too. It's my grandson, Cody's 4th birthday. We have the pool up and I have a cake in the oven.

Our AC is giving us problems too. It keeps freezing up. We are trying to limp it thru one more season.

Container Corn, Final Report!

Well, my little corn crop planted in May was harvested today.

Three rather weird looking little cobs that are almost big enough to eat :~)

And a few more that looked like this :~)

Which the horses enjoyed very much :~)

They like the stalks almost as much :~D

A whole summer's corn crop, devoured in minutes :~)

What was learned... not sure, but it was fun, and I'll probably do it again next year in a bigger pot... more plants. The variety of corn might not have been the best, it was not the "early girl" variety I've had success with in the past in this area, and it got infested with some kind of dirty looking little black bugs, which is what made me decide to pull it now, it didn't look like it was going to get any better if I left it to grow more.

Maybe I should go down and find out what variety the maze people grow and try that for next year.

Interesting corn there :)

I've never successfully grown corn so I have no advice or tips. I love the pics of the horses enjoying it though.

I really couldn't say if any of the horses we've had around here had a problem when I took one away to ride....I never worried about it. Yes, I would be sure that the fencing you left one in was good, but other then that, well, I'd say they get use to it.

I did make sure the first time I took Belle away when Dot was a baby, that Mack was here to keep an eye on her, but I truly don't remember what happened...I know she didn't hurt herself:), but if she hollered, or ran around etc....I don't remember..

Those are the only ears that looked developed enough to bother to cook... but they're rather mutant huh!

I think Mack is trying to limp us thru the rest of the season without one:) For the most part it's not too bad, afternoons it gets a bit stuffy.

Looks a lot weird:). I thought it was some kind of green goop...even knowing it is a glass pitcher it looks weird.

I was cleaning them up outside, and it's just looking straight down into a glass pitcher. The green is reflecting off the lawn :~)

Or... if your eye still can't make sense of that, then I'll just say I put it in some kind of green goop :~)

What pleasure on their faces:') I'm hurting big time. I forgot I wasn't six. I was out in the pool playing with the kids and they were riding on my back as I swam under water. I should have wised up when JJ started steering my head but one thing led to another and it became a contest on who got bucked off or could hang on:') Ohhhhh....I can hardly walk.

Hi All, I'm catching up again after being off for a few days.

Miss Targets, I'm sure glad you got those mares. They're really pretty and I love their frosty color. I agree with you about their faces. They look really sweet and I'll bet they turn out to be really nice once they get a few groceries in them.

Duchess, it sounds like you had a really nice crowd over at your place too. Thanks for the look-see.

And Hair, I loved the CornMazeMoot pictures. Everybody looks like they had a great time.

On Saturday I took Hope out for her first ride since coming home from the trainer's and she did really good. We went to a big organized trailride so there were well over a hundred other riders and she handled the crowds and noise just fine. There were lots of really steep hills to climb on this ride as well as lots of big rock clifs to look at. I took quite a few pictures and a few video clips so I hope they turn out ok. I'll post them when I get to work tomorrow.

Yesterday I smoked some ribs and my FIL fried some catfish and all we did was eat all day, aside from taking a nap on the porch swing.

Today will be another day of hay hauling. I finally found some rolls that aren't TOO far away, so I'll be hauling 35 of them, 3 at a time, back to the barn. Not a great way to spend Labor Day, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Ya'll have a great holiday and I'll talk to you tomorrow!
