The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Deuce still in a holding pattern and my stress level is at Defcon 1. Pressing hospital today for answers as to why the laser is not repaired. At least if I knew that part was on backorder, etc. I would lessen the worry. And the poor horse has this damn golfball in his throat.

On a sad note I've sent prayers out to my friend Faye. She lost her sweet 24 year old mare SJD Starburst yesterday evening. The mare had colicked during the previous night. The vet suspected a twist but had seen worse cases untwist so wanted to give her the day. Unfortunately she ruptured. Starburst had a very successful show career and was just one of the nicest, kindest horses you could ever ask for.

Thanks for listening. If I didn't already have huge patches of gray that Loreal covers before this I sure would by now!

So sorry about your friend's horse. 24 was a nice long life for her. Wow, you are still on holding with Deuce? Part must be coming from China! :)

He started this little altercation, so he's grounded.

LOL...Poor Harley.

Reminds me when I grounded a Black Molly fish for picking on the others. He spent the night on the kitchen counter in a pot.

I had a Molly male that literally killed his female... I'm told you need to have half a dozen females for every male or they just beat them up too much.

I am down at the cabin and on dialup. What a pain. I forgot how nice DSL is !!

Did you by the appaloosa? I can't go through all the posts, it would take so long. \

Got to the cabin Sunday with the rain. Nothing like planning on riding and rain comes. Monday was good , Waylon and I took about a 45 minute ride to check out the trails.

Yesterday, we took a nice long ride and lo and behold we saw a black snake that was HUGE. His circumferance had to be 4" around. He slithered right off in front of us and Waylon just kind of looked at him. He spooked, however, at falling leaves. Go figure.

I wish I had another horse. Waylon gets too bored after about 4 days, I feel bad. I'd get one but I don't want to have to board two horses at home. When I retire I will get another. '

I'm so sorry to hear about Faye's horse, prayers for her comfort.

We had to wait two months for a new ultrasound machine at our vets once. It seems to be a normal pattern. Hoping they get things fixed soon and Deuce gets taken care of. Keep picturing him well and healed.

Hey Lady, so nice to hear from you. Horse is not home yet. Probably Friday, when my daughter is off and can haul him. It's great that Waylon goes off by himself. A real pain, when they don't want to leave their "buddies".

My husband is going to have a fit. My son is finally taking the pool out of the box and setting up the pool. Between my trees, the trampoline and the swing set ,my back yard is filling up:')

I'm sorry about your still "waiting", that is so hard.

And sorry about your friends horse.

Kind of a funny coincidence. Celia came and rode with me this morning. She keeps a horse at her place that belongs to a friend of hers. The horse is a 22-25 yo, Arab mare. Last night Celia found her flat on the ground with both back legs over the fence wire. She wasn't tangled at all, no cuts, but the way her feet were she couldn't get up. Celia figures she was probably down 6-8 hours. The horses back legs were rigid, stiff as boards, and Celia had to go get a neighbor to help get her up.

She called the girl who owns the horse and she came out immediately and spent the night. The vet is there now. They called the vet last night. He told them what to do, and he would be out in the morning. It doesn't sound good. Celia called them when we got back from our ride. The vet was there. The horses breathing is still very labored, she hasn't ate anything, or drank much, the vet says he hears a heart mummer, they are not sure if this brought it on or something she has developed. The girl, she's about 30, that owns the horse I guess raised it, and grew up with it. Celia talked to the girls mother, and she said they think they are going to go ahead and put her down, but may give her a day or two to see if she gets over it on her own...

I knew it was not good for horses to be down for long periods...but I never knew what it did to them when the were...doesn't sound good at all...

Sounds like you are having fun:). I've never had one spook yet at a snake, and have come across plenty...I've always wondered why, and have wondered if they even see them.

Wow... no, it doesn't sound good at all. Maybe started out with a colic that made her roll in such a bad place?

Makes me wonder why we even bother with animals:)...they sure cause a lot of trouble:)

Mack always says horses are like keeping 2 year old kids....and they never grow out of it like the kid does:)

I'd have to agree with Celia in that she thinks she might have been rolling because of flies...they've gotten bad since the rain.

That sounds terrible. Hopefully the mare will soon be out of pain, one way or the other.

These large, wonderful creatures can be so fragile.
