The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good Morning.

Rain here today. First time in a while. Alison's cheerleading coach has 2 horses that she wants to give us. They don't have the time to sell them. Two mares that have to go together. Oh brother, just what we need. There's that old saying about "not looking a gift horse in the mouth"...lol

When we were looking at colleges, one of the college administrators explained that the reason they don't have an equestrian team is that every alumnus and every backyard pony owner in the county would be trying to 'donate' their unusable mounts to the school.

"don't have time to sell them" probably means "I couldn't sell these two if I took out a full page ad in the paper for 3 months."

Personally, I wouldn't take them if there were stipulations on "they have to go together", or "you can't sell". What if only one turns out to be what you want/need (if at all), what if neither fit you???

Funny how people "give" a gift with all kinds of rules, what kind of gift is that.

Are you still going to look at the gelding today?

Becky

Good morning,

I'm so glad to hear you got rain. I have been watching the drought monitor and the middle of the country from the Dakotas to Texas look awful.

We don't even know what kind they are. They are only down the road, so might take a look.

Becky, yes we are leaving shortly to see the gelding. It's raining, so I don't know if we will ride.

Well, we haven't seen our lizard again, but I can't help being a little creeped out knowing he might be in the couch :~\

Well, this has been an odd summer all the way around. Every thing and every body had been acting strange. Prez seems to have gotten in the spirit of it also - we can find no rational reason for his behavior, physically he is in great shape except for the weight loss. And the weight loss is noticable to us but it isn't serious - he carried a lot of weigh because of his size.

LOL - I don't have birthdays anymore, I merely celebrate the year I turned 39. I've been celebrating that for twenty years now.

Oh boy - your retirement is getting busier by the minute. What kind of mares, how old, are they something that you can sell?

That is so true. I get contacted at least once a month by someone who has a horse that needs a home. At last count, I think I've fallen for ten of them. I have been able to find good homes for all but three of them though, but it took years and lots of feed bills.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, maybe you'll have a break in the rain so you can ride the gelding and see what he's like.

I got 2 horses and donkey on a deal like that, they all had to go together. I turned around and sold all 3 separately, to good homes. I sold them at different times and they sure didn't act like they missed the missing ones. No whinneying, running around, nothing. I kept up with one of them, he's still doing fine at his new home.

I never heard again from the previous owner after I bought them so they have no idea what became of the trio.

I think people sometimes confuse a bond between two horses as something special and unbreakable, when really, they would move on and adjust to a new circumstance just fine.

It could also be something as simple as "must go together" because she wants to get out of the horse business in one swoop, and getting rid of one doesn't help her.

Some pictures from last week-end (can you tell I'm putting off house cleaning and laundry? :)

Prez and Crystal, little girl who borrowed him for her class.

Prez, Krista (g-niece) and Tuffy with Janelle (friend) in color halter.

Prez and Krista

Janelle with her mare, Maggie and one of her granddaughters and Prez with Krista and Janelle's other granddaughter in leadline. Everyone placed first (five in class) much to the disgust of a woman whoses daughter is 10th in the nation in leadline :) She packed up and left in a cloud of dust.

Janelle and Tuffy in Halter class

Janelle and Tuffy again

This is Prez in June, you can see the weight he's dropped.

Terrific pictures, While prez may be losing weight, his weight sure looks good in the pictures.

And Tuffy is really really striking as he grows up. He's wonderful. Is he still for sale?

I feel for folks in black long sleeves and jackets in the heat. I'd have wilted!

I'm amazed there's someone who is 10th in the nation in leadline! Is that really the point of leadline? Good grief.

Her tenth in the nation is in the Appaloosa Horse Club and I was surprised about that to tell the truth. I'm guessing the points were just for number of shows she was in this year because generally around here everyone wins in leadline. 'Course this lady was from Oregon so who knows :)

Bob and I are still *discussing* Tuffy being for sale. Bob does not want to sell him and I contend he needs to go to a big name barn/trainer and be campaigned like he deserves. We'll see what happens but I imagine Bob will win out on it.

And yes, everyone was about to roast in the heat. Next show and last this year, Krista is going in a white retro western shirt made of cotton. The sleazys and jackets are just too much.
