This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Fascinating arrangement with the vet :~) And LOL on the "whispering trailers"
Too tubby and too *nice*... Hmmmmm.... Let us know.
Cyn would become rank if allowed to. Heck, when we got her we carried a bat with us opening the gate because she'd run us over. Her prior let her get away with that stuff.
Bay might go too far sometimes, but he backs up three steps if I so much as "AAAATCH" him, that's the difference I see with them.
Jeez Louise, you guys, I leave for a few hours and the thread goes to pot. :)
I've been keeping everything in perspective. For instance, I was at the children's hospital last week with one of my kids, who has an internal defect and needs testing regularly. Anyway, while there, I was chatting with a nurse. She said last week some parents came into the emergency room with their 5 week old baby. The baby was covered in bruises and one hand had been dipped in boiling water.
I'm not concerned with raffles. I can't get the thought of that baby out of my head.
Understood about perspective, it's always good. The power of people to do evil still shocks us sometimes.
But that didn't keep you from making a big deal about goose livers on your free time :~D
I was mad at the world, I needed to take it out on someone. I'm just glad no one cut me off in traffic when I was on the way back from the hospital. I was a menace.
I bet.

The AC man if finally on his way:)

I used to work in a trauma ER. After several years I transfered out. I loved it but I couldn't keep the kids out of my head.
When I retire. I can't afford a positive pee test:')
Dude :~)
The AC is permanently dead:(
Becky
Oh no! How much for the new one?
That's what I was going to say. If it's a horsey day, back on the line they go. I can see both sides to this. You can stop them in their tracks which is good but stopping them with voice is too IMO anyway. As for as when work starts that varies. When I get them from the pasture , I wait until they lower their head. I don't fight them. If I have to chase them they are gonna work so I guess the work starts before I even halter. The rule is no games when I tell you it's time to go. In the round pen , mine don't just go in and start running. They wait until I cue them. They don't really run in the pasture much (Sarah Lee anyway) so I want them to get their "I feel good" bucks and kicks out of the way. They know when it's time to settle down. While we are ground working, mine aren't allowed to graze until I drop the lead rope on the grass. So, for me it's teaching them the entire time we are together when it's free time and when they can have down time. There might be a better way but so far thru trial and error this has worked best for me.
Don't know, he's going to check Mon. In the meantime we are going to take up residence at the building or hook up the RV....we're getting a bit irritable, and need some relief:)

That all sounds good. Really, I'm not being sarcastic. A lot of that I do too, when I first get a horse home. BUT:) the real test is when you get her out on trails among other horses. That's when you know if all your ground work, round pen, voice command work worked, and the horse respects you as it's leader.
From the history you have given us of SL, that she came from a dude string, she "ought" to be fine. I'd say she's been exposed to alot of things, it's just been awhile tho since she's been out.
Those are things I just think you should be aware of. They are things I keep in mind when I take one out the first time.

The gray mare (The Hell Bitch) had a prior owner that used to scream and jump backwards when HB shook herself during a bath. It went on from there. She learned how to intimidate!
I'd mess around with her but her trot would kill you. It's not worth it.
Yes, I have started taking Buck in the round pen and we walk a couple of times around before he gallops. So they don't get into that "tear-away and bolt" business.
Yeah for safety, mine wait for me to come in first and then aren't allowed in until I "cluck" . I set them up and make them stand while I put up the lead rope. Only rarely do they start running. They learned fast that "momma likes to run and if I start she makes me keep going, when I want to stop" The exception was for the mare. I'm guessing but I think someone put her in a round pen and ran the hell out of her before a ride. At first I cut her some slack but she understands now. She's a mystery. I didn't plan on it but she's become a one person horse. I don't know if that is good or bad.
This may not be a Texas storm after all. It's turning north.
