The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'm going to be gone most of the day but I thought ya'll would like to see me being skewered on a foie gras thread. I swear, some of those people didn't bother to read my posts before going on the attack, or they have a reading/comprehension problem.

Your post raises some interesting discussion points, and beings as Cindy said it was an interesting topic they may be worth a bit more discussion, so I'll put in my 2 cents worth:), because 1) this IS a discussion forum where people come together to discuss different points of view wether in agreement or disagreement, 2) I don't understand what "crap" you are talking about. Nothing that I have read to this point could be labled "crap" IMO. Can you clarify? I just see several here that are discussing the cons of the raffle.

My thoughts on the raffle:

Western Church or not, IS there any "guarantee" that the horse will go to a knowledgeable horseman, or someone who is willing to learn? Is there any questions asked about this when the ticket is sold to each individual? Obviously MEMBERS, can sell tickets outside of the membership of the church, but since you specified that only MEMBERS can visit the horse to see if they are compatible with the horse, selling outside membership doesn't guarantee that the horse WILL be compatible to the winner.

The price of the ticket, COULD be an issue. As has been stated earlier, people will fork over $5 without little thought, but $1000 would give them pause to really consider. IMO:), most people buying raffle tickets don't expect to win, they are just contributing to a good cause. With this in mind, and especially since members can sell tickets outside of the membership, you do run a risk of someone winning who didn't really want it. Would you agree? What happens then?

I'm stating these points 1) to point out the "possible" dangers of raffling off a horse, and 2) wondering how a responsible raffle of a horse COULD be run? Is there any way?

My opinion on raffling a horse, or any live animal....I think it's risky for the animal and winner alike. What should be done to run a responsible raffle. Since your church is a "western" church, with so many knowledgeable horsemen, it shouldn't be that hard....If the horse is won by a non-member, or a member who is not familiar with horses, some one could be appointed to keep up and report on the horse for say a year.... I'd be interested to know if there were any concerns raised in your church about this topic when the horse was donated?

My thoughts on the: "As for me, I left this forum earlier as I don't have the patience for crap. I gather you got your feelings hurt over the discussion about raffles. I'm sorry for that, BUT, this is a discussion forum. I only want to comment about this because I see FR becoming more and more PC, and about "feelings" rather then expressing honest opinions, especially on threads like this one where posters become very familiar with each other and consider ourselves friends. How can there be discussion only with people who agree all the time? How can we learn, see the potential good and bad of ideas, situations, actions, if they are not pointed out. The bad of something might be legit, but not thought of by some till it is pointed out. That has happened to me numerous times. I was glad to be told.

I for one have become frustrated with this turn to PC on FR, and this thread. Numerous times there have been things I'd like to comment on, but because my thoughts "might hurt feelings" rather then be taken in the spirit of 1) just plain ole debate 2) my effort to help, I've NOT commented. I'm here to say to ALL, that I'm commenting from now on:). I do not mean that in a way that I'm out to "get" anyone, I'm not. I WANT to debate, help, and learn myself. IF some one here wants to take my comments personally and leave, so be it, I will be sorry, BUT I'm making it clear right now, my intentions are NOT to run anyone off, or hurt feelings, or be mean or sarcastic. I'm just discussing. I can/will remain friends and a poster here even after a hot debate and disagreement with one of you:), I can agree to disagree:)

Good Morning.

Certainly can tell I have not been on a horse in awhile. Just a little bit of a sore butt. We are planning on going back to see the Appaloosa gelding tomorrow. This time I will ride him and make a decision.

Good morning. Have fun tomorrow. I think you'll know if he's the right horse for you when you ride him - might take your trailer along just incase.

Ok. I'll call. Does this go two ways? IMO, there is a difference between PC and getting your point across or asking questions without hurting peoples feelings. No matter how hard I tried I would still be biased towards Reba so I'm going to bring up some stuff before she posted. So.. Is this supposed to be an experts only thread and the novices/intermediates are expected to be quiet and listen and are shot down (with both barrels) any time they come up with something the experts have a different opinion about? In case yall haven't noticed, they don't stick around. I'm it. I was here at the beginning and like yall and I like to learn, but lately even I have only posted when posted too. I just came back..well you know why. For survival here though I try not to bring up stuff now until after the fact, so I walk on egg shells lately too.</p>

Good morning everyone :)

I'm really sorry to see hurt feelings here over the raffle question, but I'd hate to think that we were in a position of posting only what someone wants to hear so that there would be no hurt feelings.

I'm so against raffles for animals because of all the stated problems. Having spent a good many years and a lot of money rescueing all sorts of critters, I have seen the worst of it. That said, even the ApHC has a raffle every year or so for an appaloosa foal. It's a guaranteed way to raise money.

Reba, don't let others of us disagreeding upset you or hurt your feelings. Buy as many tickets as you can afford and maybe you'll win the horse and can give it to Cindy. The raffle will happen no matter what we think about it, so enjoy, support your church, and say a prayer that the horse goes to someone who can and will take care of it.

I disagree with half the people here on the board in one matter or another regarding how to raise and train a horse. That doesn't mean I'm right and they are wrong, or visa versa - just that we all come from different backgrounds and points of view. And we're comfortable with what works for us.

As for the raffle..I take care of me and mine and step in if I think an animal is being mistreated but I don't take responsibility for every horse and every potential rider. Most people do the right thing or learn from their mistakes. I think it would be very nannyish to stop them. That doesn't mean the person raffling shouldn't set some guidelines though.

LOL - I'd sure miss you if you left. I have never felt this was an expert's only thread. Heck, none of us are experts, no matter what we might think. Haven't seen John Lyons or Christian Anderson posting yet.

There are no questions that can't/shouldn't be asked for how else would we learn? We all have different styles of replying to get our point of view across, and we all have different ways of training, feeding, and riding.

Sometimes I jump in, sometimes it's not worth the rise in blood pressure. I try to respond when I think it's a matter of safety or health but that doesn't mean I'm right - just that it is my opinion. And advice freely given is worth about that much :) And I hope you win the horse.

You bet it goes two way. But from the tone of your post, it's obvious you take everything in the spirit of we are insulting you, rather then voicing our opinions on some topic you commented on. For me, that is not the case....

I know there have been people who have left, I know you have left at times with hurt feelings, I'm sorry, but I don't understand, really, and my tone here is just one of puzzlement.

Your comments like "For survival here" and "walk on egg shells"....WHY, can you be specific. And no I don't know why you left, and are now back. What brought that on????

I've tried so many times to tell you that I made every mistake in the book when I first got horses. And I mean EVERY mistake. There is no shame in that. Especially if you learn form it. The shame comes from being unwilling to learn.

OK, here comes something that may hurt, but please note, I do not mean it in that way, but I don't feel that you ever take the advise given here, that's one reason I quit giving it. I tried hard NOT to give advise to you unless you asked for it. But even then your responses most of the time were "yeah, but....." When you get a yeah but from someone, you know they are going to go on their merry way and do what they want, even tho the advise came from someone who just might be a bit more knowledgeable. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with that, you going on your merry way....but you shouldn't expect the people giving the advise, especially when they were asked for it, to not get a bit frustrated with you.

This is not an experts only thread, IMO. It's a thread for anyone to post, pretty much about anything on. But if you ask for advise, remember, you may get advise you don't really want to hear....Or if you even comment on something here, you may get advise or comments that you don't like or agree with....it is an OPEN discussion. Why does everything have to be so nicey nicey????? And that doesn't mean I'm advocateing nasty nasty:).

When someone, especially me:), disagrees with something, or wants to point out where IMO, someone has done something wrong, it's hard to make it sound all sweet and surgary....it may just be an opinion, but if it's wrong to someone it's wrong, and on an open discussion as this it should be allowed to be said with out someone else with a different opinion, running off and acting all hurt. EVERYTHING ON THIS FORUM IS "OPINION"......Have a little more confidence in yours own.

Becky

Your pictures from your ride were great.

We don't have any insects here, they've all been burnt up and dried out. The horseflies/deerflies were bad for a while but now they're probably mummified and I don't have to put as much spray on the horses.

Cindydawg I hope your mowing is over for a while. I ain't got nuthin' left to mow!

I think feelings are taken into consideration on this thread.

IE. The people who commented about the raffle could have come on and said "ARe you stupid!!!!!, Don't you get how dumb that is.... etc. etc."

But that is not what happened, They/we just pointed out very nicely, IMO, that raffling a horse may not be the best thing to do. That was it...and now that is crap??????
