The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Ah - well if you had company on the ride, you undoubtedly took some pictures then! :~D Right?

Good to ride with someone anyway, breaks up the routine :~)

Our pony is in heat... and there has been a certain amount of flaunting and teasing and squealing going on here today. And it's cloudy and damp feeling, but not raining, although it feels like it could any minute.

I meant to add:

Just since last week, I think Harley's underline is starting to tighten up. I noticed it yesterday, the back cinch is not as snug as it was in the hole I put it in. I don't think he is loosing weight, just firming up.

I ran a little test yesterday. When I got back I hosed him off when I pulled the saddle, THEN tried to massage him. He reacted like he was sore, which he doesn't do if I massage him immediately after pulling the saddle even tho he is still sweaty wet.

I guess I won't be hosing his back at the ride:). Don't know he acts sore because the water is cooler and causes him to flinch or if it;s true what I've been told that hosing with cool water slows circulation and the release of lactic acid which will cause them to sore up.

OOOPS, never thought about the camera. I'll get some tomorrow:) I did bring her in and showed her my Wa. trip pictures:)

Yeah it was nice to have some one to ride with. We had a lot of catching up. Stormy looks as if he has picked up some weight since spring. He needed it.

It sounds like it's the cold water right after. Too much of a change, too hot to cold... doesn't make the muscles happy.

What if you hosed him after the massage, after he's cooled off from the heat of the workout... does he still act sore after that?

Deuce update: Endo loop was not successful, which didn't suprise the vet. He fired up the Laser and the machine errored out on him. Ugh! We have very similar laser machines here at work and sometimes they can be really snotty.

Tech will come fix laser on Friday and first tx will happen then. He may need several laser sessions. Dr feels tissue was congenital deformity that got irritated and grew. He said Deuce is being a great patient and they're taking him for multiple walks daily.

Thanks for all your good wishes, thoughts and prayers!

I've never done that, but it would be interesting. I'll give it a whirl.

I'll be curious, because we've not noticed frequent soreness with ours, but they aren't hosed off till they get home... so depending on how quick we are, it's 30 minutes later after cooling off and trailer ride.

He's going to stay. Vet asked that I leaved him there and it's a two hour drive anyway. Their stalls are nearly twice the size of ours at home and the turnout area looks like sod. The grass in my yard never looked so good!

I'll miss him but he's in good hands.

Boy, some heat cycles sure seem to be stronger than others... Seems like some months go by without noticing when anyone is in heat, and then one month, both mares are acting like frustrated hussies and Bay's interested enough to mark them up and act like he almost knows what they want.

Look at the pony, the lower marks look like teeth, but the mark right above that look like hoof. It's sore, she pulled away when I touched it, but it doesn't look open, just bruised.

Cyn's butt is all marked up too.

That might can be arranged.

Well lets pencil it in then. My step son gets married on Saturday the 2nd so Sunday is better for me, then we have Monday to recoup before going to work. I was pretty wiped out yesterday after riding all weekend in this heat. I would like to do the blue trail again (and bring the camera this time) do you think Hope can handle that long a ride?

Wow, ruff pony sex! ;o) Do ya think those lower marks might be from the nails on the bottom of Bay's shoes? He was shod not too long ago wasn't he? In any event, it looks like he definately knows what they want and has been trying to deliver it.

That's probably too much of a ride for Hope, although I'm sure Troy's been riding her for several hours at a time while he's had her. He said she was tought as nails, but I might just bring Grace and save Hope for the next weekend.

I've not seen him mount the pony before, but he has mounted Cyn, and I have the pictures to prove it, remember?

The pony's just too little and he's too heavy. He's too old (and too gelded) to be tryin that crap anyhow... :~\

Does your trainer take them out on trail too, as part of his training, or just arena? I'd like a trainer that took them out on trail, you'd get a horse that's a lot more ready to go when he was done.

Yeah, he trail rides the heck out of them. That's why they're so good when I get them back. He teaches them to cross water and go through mud and slide down hills on their butts and step over logs and ride with other horses and all kinds of good stuff, in addition to working on their gait. He's a very good trainer for my purposes.

He may have just gotten tired of her teasing and said "OK, you want it, you got it!". Something tells me he ain't gonna be calculating how big she is and how much he weighs when the mood strikes him. As for being too old and gelded, how many males have you ever seen pay any attention to that when a sweet young thang waves her butt in his face?! ;o)
