This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Tuffy: Miss Targets
Tuffy I still have pretty good grass so I am not hard up for hay. I have 30 acres and got a really good deal on leasing 70 more and the grass is holding out so far despite the drought.
I bring Buck in at night when I want to ride in the early a.m. (to the corral by the house) which is the only time I need hay to keep him happy all night, and I just buy that 'grazer' stuff for $8 a bale, and throw a little alfalfa on top of it. That keeps him happy. Then after I ride turn him out on the 30.
Square bales of coastal are $10 here. The bale of alfalfa was outrageous, I think it was nearly $15, but I just use a little bit at a time to make the 'grazer' tasty.
Miss Targets, I have had very bad luck with AgDirect. I looked for a horse for nearly a year after my Thoroughbred died (poor Miss Accident-Prone)and three times I made about a 400 mile round trip to see horses on Ag Direct and they were absolutely nothing like as advertised.
That's here in Texas.
Where are you? You might have better luck in another state.
No sign of the beaver this morning, but we can sure see the amount of dirt he's tunnelling out of the bank! Agreed, it's not good. I guess the trapper poured coyote urine in the hole yesterday.... Where exactly do they ~get~ that?
Homer is having a ball playing with Ruthy and Ramius's new dog at the moment, and we're sipping coffee. Will get some 'kids and dogs playing on the beach' pictures' later :~)
Rosie is having a few trials as our horse sitter, she was unable to keep Cyn from stealing the pony's grain, the witch... Cyn knows when she can get away with things :~) No big deal either way, neither Cyn nor the pony are getting enough grain, so they're both mad :~).
Never heard of "Medicine Cap" but I'm curious as well if it's keeping an old guy running barrels at 31 :~)
I'm going to try to get the name of the company that makes this stuff, maybe then I can find it on google. All I'm getting now is stuff in capsules. I'm curious about it too. The horse didn't look "too" bad. I've seen worse. He was just thin, but seemed to move fine.

Keeping horses out of each others feed pans can be difficult. I was impressed how well you all do:). I wouldn't have the patience to stand there...I'd have them in the stalls.

We yell at her and that usually stops her. If not, we spray her with the hose :~)

Is it my imagination, or is there less snow on Mt. Rainier then when I was there...I'll have to go look at a picture.

This is when you were here.
After the show, I went to see the Appaloosa gelding from Agdirect. It was only about a 45 min. drive from the showgrounds. He was a really good looking horse, beautiful head and color. For the money they are asking, I would have thought he would have been better broke. She rode him and he walks, trots and canters, but not all collected. He was just flying around the arena. Come to find out, she has only had him this summer and she broke him. He is seven years old! I don't think he is worth more then 1000-1500. It would take at least 60 days at the trainers to finish him. Which wouldn't be too bad, if the price was not almost 3000.
Huh - I see... So his temperament is calm by nature and not by training... and that's good! Well I guess they did say he needed to be finished.

Well now that you're retired, you have time to put some polish on the gelding. Will they go down much in price (they did say best offer didn't they?)
Yes, the gelding was nice and calm as far as not being spooky, but he was in his own realm. It was worth a look, and not really out of my way to see him. Maybe, I am used to getting these "bargain basement" horses. :). I just thought he was overpriced. I really didn't want to insult the people, by offering what I thought he was worth. He was just not the horse for me.
The price on horses is all over the board, and depends much more on who someone is marketing the horse ~to~ than anything intrinsic about the horse.
Depending on the background and marketing, the same horse could vary by thousands depending on whether you are selling as a trail horse, selling as a show horse, selling as a jumper, selling as a barrel racer.
Try to remember the camera next time Alison shows :)
