This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
oh - so I guess I'm back to wondering... what do feet look like before the founder damaged hoof grows out... the hooves in the pictures on that thread are showing damage from 3 months ago.
George's feet never looked like that. They've always looked just like the pics I posted. That girl has let her horse's feet get out of control, with that ridiculously long toe and underrun heel. There's no excuse for that.
By the way, your post to Merikle about feeding that poor horse grain was right on the money. The idiot was graining that horse!!! Sheesh, thought she was an expert....
Well, she probably let the founder itself get worse than you ever did. I have no doubt it wasn't treated with skill.
You got a reply from her, she did mean just the foal was getting grain. I posted to her about it the same time she posted her explanation. Now I feel like a doofus.
I could tell when George was heading towards laminitis and I went into action pretty quick. He never had the chance to get too bad.
Don't feel like a doofus... her post was not clear... she used 'she' to describe a horse getting grain and bute in the same sentence, and I don't think she's buting that baby.
Looks like rain today. We did have a nice dry streak. Even with a hurting back, I did manage to groom some trails and mow behind the pasture, yesterday. First time this year and it was really overgrown.
You'd think that, but it's actually what's tearing the hoof wall away from the lamina, that's why they rasp it down so thin at the toe, not all the way to the meat or anything, just to the white line, so it will stop the tearing. All you're doing is removing the outer pigmented layer of hoof. Since hooves have 3 layers, there's still enough structural integrity left in the white line and the unpigmented 'water line' to keep the inner structures of the foot in place.
You remember the pictures of the little pony on the Farrier forum that had the turned up elf-shoe toes and how far back they cut those toes back. As long as you know where the tip of the coffin bone is, either by looking at x-rays or visualizing the angle of it by looking at the angle of the coronary band, and stay away from it, then backing the toe is the recommended thing to do.
Thanks.... I hope I never have to see it closer up or deal with it!
I posted this morning over there for her to post pictures of the foam feet because I'm curious to see it. I've been trying to imagine cutting pieces of construction foam and duct taping it on, with baby diapers, and I want to see that in action, and wonder if it stays on.
I just have this sneaking suspicion, since she went out and took pictures last night of the horse, pictures that deliberately ~don't~ show the feet (and the feet are the whole point!) that she is NOT standing her on foam feet, that she got overwhelmed by the prospect, didn't have the foam, or thinks it's not important.
My thoughts exactly! I kept looking at each picture to see if I could see the feet to. I don't have a good feeling bout this "kid" and what she "says" she is doing for this poor horse.
I know enough about people, and teenagers, to know they lie, particularly if they're defensive. And she's both teenage and defensive :~)
My only hope is that in the pictures, The mare's posture is very normal and relaxed, she does not have the look of a horse in a lot of pain.
I agree to all your points. She talks up a good story. Bet she has her parents wrapped.
Looking at the picture of a foundered horse munching on green grass gives me chills.
I have only seen one foundered horse once a few years ago and a friends farm, he was helping the owners soak the feet. I saw that poor horse walking and it looked to be in so much pain. I am so thankful that I have not had to deal with that. I had a horse I used to own that had an abcess I had to soak and that was bad enough!
Dealing with a founder is a major league pain in the rear, not to mention expensive. I can't imagine that a 16 year old girl has the where-with-all to deal with it, by herself, appropriately.
Sounds like a great horse!
I just went back over to that site and caught up on the post and that girl is STILL in denial about having to make changes in her horse's living arrangements and diet. I mean, they've pointed her at the Safergrass site and she apparently hasn't read it or is ignoring it. They've pointed her at all the hoofcare websites and she's apparently not looked at them either. She says she wants advise but she really just wants everybody to pat her on the head tell her that what she's doing is good for her horse and is waiting for somebody to wave a magic wand and make it all go away. Fiddle-dee-dee, tomorrow's another day!
Exactly right.
I can't wait to see if she posts pics of the mare's feet with the pads and things on.
She would really benefit from reading the stuff over at the Cushings/IR Yahoo group, but she's not gonna do any of that stuff either so there's no point in even suggesting it. Have you ever made it over to that site?
