The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Are you stating that the new pad slips inside the cashell or vice versa?

The cashell (foam) cushion you see in 3617 is ~inside~ the new pad. It has a pocket that runs the whole length of it, where you can slip a pad in between the layers.

I think the overhang is good too, it's just a little more than I thought it would be. You can see I moved the saddle bags up anyway, to my front rings, so it's actually under the saddle and it's also got the extra pad under it. But it can still slip back, and that edge of the saddle bag might be what rubbed him as much as the pad before.

The white one is not extra large (So it was the wrong size, and the wrong color), it would fit 'neater'. I haven't taken it out of the package yet. I'll save it for some occasion when I want to look nice :~)

Then the black foam looking thing is another pad right under the saddle?

Yes, the black foam looking thing is a special pad that was made to fit Bay's back and fill in the voids so the saddle doesn't bridge him. It's fairly stiff foam.

Her not coming was not that big a deal. In fact, probably better. She only likes to ride 2 hours or less, and I'm shooting for 3 now. And she doesn't like to do much more then walk, and we've been doing and need to more long trotting. I just have trouble telling people no who want to come ride.

I just thought her reason for not coming silly. She keeps telling me she needs to "learn" to hook up the trailer....but just really doesn't want too.

I'll grant her that it's a little harder without someone to eyeball you in, but I wouldn't have let it keep me from going either! :~\

Well, if the cushion moves, could you turn the pad inside out and take in a little around the back edge...to tighten up the cushion...Do you have a sewing machine?:) Or will they exchange it?

Once it's cinched I don't think it'll move. It's just a question of being able to feel where it is. and position it right.

I thought about stiching around it, I might do that, even by hand.

...Horsechow 100...How the heck am I getting it for $7.50...Do you have a dealer of Purina feeds in your area?

Yes I do. I just called him and they don't normally stock it but will order it if I want them to for $10.50 a bag. So I'd say you're getting a racehorse deal on what you're getting!

I think there is a Purina Mill in OK City. So it does not have to be shipped that far.

Hell, if I had to wait for somebody to hook up the trailer for me before I could ride, I'd never get to go. I refuse to be at other people's mercy. That's why I learned how to operate the tractor/bushhog/front-end loader. I can even change out the bucket for the hay fork by my self. It's a pain in the butt and it takes me 5 times as long, but I don't have to wait on somebody to 'get around to it' either.

What would be helpful when hitching up alone is to have two flags on poles, like those bicycle flags, or even just the poles, one that would attach where the ball is, and one over the hitch, so you could tell where you needed to back to.

I had something like that for a while and it helped SOME, but it ended up getting broke. To me, one of these things would be more helpful...

All you'd have to do would be get close and the guide would scoot the hitch into position over the ball, or that's the theory anyways. I've never actually seen one used, but it LOOKS like it would work.

I'm bein' a meany again.

The Farrier & Hoofcare Resource Center Forums (formerly the Bulletin Boards) - In Foal Foundered mare....

What do you think? Too hard on her? Over-reactive and maybe the mare wasn't that bad? Or was the mare that bad and now she's trying to minimize? What about her age? Should she be treated different?

____________

Here's another one... Less divisive, more fascinating from a diagnostic POV. A yearling who's entire hoof capsule sluffed off, and she was standing on an exposed coffin bone. Turns out badly, the lack of lameness was not good news, but rather severe nerve damage.

The pictures are remarkable.

I saw that... and it would work really well for trailers that can roll pretty easy, but ours doesn't, at least when we try to push it by hand.

I don't think you were to hard on her. You have to be with most people, especially ones that young....heck how many people have you seen actually take any advise when given it...especially about horses:)

I say go for it....I have to LOL, about how she posted the original post and then later says she didn't post it to be lectured....why the heck did she even ask for info then....

Drives me nuts, how these discussion forums have to be so PC....what's the point:) I think she actually must have thought she was going to pats on the head for taking care of this horse.

Never... heck, sometimes I don't even take my own :~)

She's digging in. Whatever she wanted to hear, she didn't get it.
