The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Not ran into any horses like that. It was always, Hurry up, lets go, what's the holdup here? Of course at the end of the ride they were happy to see the trailer. : )

Yes, Lacey turned a year old in May. She's just a baby. I haven't let anyone back Quest yet and he's 15.3 hands now. But he just turned 2yr in May. Still growing and forming bones.

I know stock horse types mature a little faster than Arabs, but I sure think it pays to wait till three. They may look strong at two, but I think working too hard too early takes years off at the end, definately.

My question though was, are horses capable of enjoying getting out and riding or is it a willing animal and really just for us. When you take a dog out for a walk, they love it. I don't know about horses though.

IMO, it's just a willing animal. Some are more willing then others, so it may be mistaken for enjoyment, but, IMO:), it's just more willing.

I've never had trouble catching my horses, they always just let me walk up to them (that is unless Grizzly "helps":), I've never had trouble loading them to go...but I don't know, I've never thought that it was because they "enjoyed" it, It's just what they do because they've been trained too.

It ends up aging them, I personally think it causes sway backs and back problems and I know it causes leg problems. Some horses are fully grown at 2yrs but Apps grow until they are five generally.

Most responsible sports - endurance, etc. won't let you participate with a horse younger than five. "Course the breed shows want those two year olds in Western Pleasure, fully trained. They don't tell you that generally by 5 the horse is a basket case. They break down physically and mentally.

I'm glad you brought her back. She's one of my favorites too.

Funny, turns out Bob likes her too, and thinks her mom is "one hell of a mare". We have both realized we aren't cut out for selling our babies - or our adults. We want good homes for them and people to love them like we do.

Well, we are going to check out a breed sell in September - if we can "no sell" them, we'll take some to that.

I agree and all my horses were gated. Gated as in hanging their heads over the pasture gate as soon as they noticed I was around. Doing their best to make sure I saw them. It did not start out that way but that is the way they were when I sold them.

Good morning. No sell - if I don't like the price I can not sell them. I think it's a consignment auction but a no sell would mean that I don't have to let them go if I'm not happy with the price.

Good Morning.

We all had a great time camping. Weather was perfect. Low 80's during the day and sunshine, but it did get rather cool at night. After that 90 degree heat, when it gets down to the 50's at night, that feels cold. Alison had her birthday party on Friday night with cake and ice cream. We swam, mini golf, water slide and ate a lot. Here are a couple of shots.

The water was a little too cool for me, but I went in. As long as you stayed down out of the wind, it was ok. Alison and I.

Amy and Alison getting ready to go down the water slide. Alison was so scared to try it for the first time. She was crying and didn't want to go. After that first time, you couldn't get her to stop

Here was the first run. You can see she had her arms out to slow herself down.

Good morning.

Just back from my ride, your pictures look sooooooooooooo nice:) Very cool, in both senses of the word:)

I think we are making great progress in conditioning and Harley's soreness issues. We did the hills and some flat work, and he never seemed to gas out. AND:), when I got back and pulled the saddle off I massaged him wet. I started out with a few gentle passes over his loins where he has come up sore in the past, and slowly increased the pressure, and he never flinched once....

Is it the massages with this Stick that is helping....???? I wish they could tell us. But for now, I'm going to be religiously fanatical about using it:)

It could be that just starting out gently is helping... Harley might also have some memory of being sore there before, and has an expectation that you're going to poke too hard, so he flinches whether he's sore or not, like the Arab stallion you talked about does...

So if you can overcome any habit that might be there, you'll help him in the vet checks!

That could be....but he didn't flinch if I let him dry....I'd think if it was habit, he would have done it even then...????

I'm trying not to be "overly" optimistic. He still needs to come in after a 5-6 hour competition ride and not be sore. But I "think" we are making progress:)

It's hard to say, always a guessing game, huh.... I spend half my time wondering if I'm battling something mental or physical with horses :~)

It's just hard to know.

I'm also wondering if the little vibrating bug gouged more...this roller, I would think, spreads the pressure out over a bigger area, not so concentrated...

Anyway, I feel more optimistic then I have been, that we might just be OK now.
