This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
The horse will play off your actions. If you do not make a big deal of anything, the horse will accept it in stride.
You doing it because you're an experienced rider taking part in big re-enactment shows is a whole nuther level than a fairly new rider wanting to go on a trail ride, don't you think?
I said leave it to Hollywood stunt riders... Maybe I should have included historical re-enactors in that :~)
Well right now, I just want them to get used to "bang" and a cue from the ground. I'll see how that goes before deciding to take it further. You want pictures?
I had a Great-Grandfather and a Great-GreatGrandfather along with their relatives that rode Confederate Cavalry during the CW. I tried re-enactment a few years to see what it was like. : )
Yeah, I know. I was just kidding. I'm glad they were on the right side:')
How was it? As much fun as you anticipated?
True, but the horses do not mind if it is presented to them in a way that they understand. They like to be taught new things and enjoy it immensely. Just think, all they have to do is stand around in a pasture all day which is boring to a horse. To get out and go somewhere with other horses and riders just makes their day. Any time they get to spend with their buddy, meaning you, is quality time to them.
I had relatives that served on the other side too. Downright proud of all of them.
It was fun to carry three revolvers, a sabre and doublebarrel shotgun on horseback. Mounting and dismounting can get a bit complicated at times but it was still fun. The horses loved it.
Just a little Southern goosing. I would be proud of them too. Sad time in our history though, huh? I have read stories about brothers being on different sides. I don't know my family history. Well I do know my granddaddy was in WW2. I was telling a family member that , and he kind of ticked me off. He said he was just a COOK. I told him so... someone had to feed the troops and that it was an honorable job. Since I'm already fantasizing...maybe he was like Casey and really a Seal? You think?
Wow. You don't talk about it much but you must be a very good rider. Just mounting with all of that had to be a trip.
Yes, It was a sad time. Hope we do not repeat that again.
You should be proud of your GrandDad. At least he served proudly and did not run off to Canada like some did during the VN war. I will bet that one of your relatives has your family history written down. You will have to ask at the next reunion.
Well actually we are working on it. 3 of us independently. It looks like some of my male kin may have ran with the James boys. Maybe that is where I got this horse/gun thing:') (I am very proud of my Granddad:')
That would be the Younger brothers?
Some of mine rode under General Forest. : )
Well, I wish I could help them more but I don't have the time right now. Heck, I'm working for free as I talk to yall tonight. Hopefully things will slow down a little. My dads side amuses me but I really want to dig into my moms. I come up blank past my great grandparents. All people know is that they showed up from somewhere and changed their last name.
"It looks like some of my male kin may have ran with the James boys."
I had one that tried stealing horses from the Indians in OK. He was a failure at that and next tried robbing trains. That was the end of the line for him. : )
"All people know is that they showed up from somewhere and changed their last name."
My last name was changed also to the English version. After the later ones were born the change was forgotten. Made backtracking a little difficult.
Maybe we are kin:')
Nah, just kissing cousins, maybe........ : )
I think we are posting to Elvis:')
