The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

They HATE the new hay, and they're hungry, there isn't much for forage out in the pasture.

Most of what we fed last night was still out there, stirred around. They played musical piles and ran each other around but never found a pile they liked. Dang Canary Grass. So many of the locals use it in hay fields, because it grows a lot of bulk, fast, and stays greener longer... It may make for more bales, but horses DONT LIKE IT.

I watered it down this morning to see if that makes it more palatable... So far, a little better. They're at least standing there munching at the moment.

I figured if they didn't eat it today and tonight, we'd have to go get some better.

"Good luck with the AC today!"

If you do not get your AC working today you could try the cowboy hat and boots method. Just stand beside the highway waving a flag. The local constables will find a cool cell for you............

: )

My preference to stay cool is old fashion homemade peach icecream and a large shade tree.

It does seem to be a more sensible approach :~)

It's cool here... 61 and kinda overcast. We're not invited to the heat wave this week I guess.

I think we should market Cyn as a horse that can play the dead fallen horse in all those medieval battle sequences.

It works. : )

As a pilot I used to see new homes being built in former agriculture fields. The nearest tree would be a quarter of a mile away. Can you even imagine what the monthly utility bills would be for these homes in 100 degree summer heat? The logic of that escapes me.

It is 93* and sunny here. Humidity is 46% and heat index is 99*.

I live in Western Washington where we don't even have air conditioning in most homes... I'm a firm believer in shade :~D

My horse used to do that only she would snore so loud that leaves fell off nearby trees. Next morning someone always complained, Your horse snores all night.

Some of my shade trees are four to five feet across at the base. Of course, if a tornado ever comes through here, those trees will be gone ... along with my home.

Same here... The trees in my yard would flatten my house. That's why I worry in the couple windstorms we get each winter. 360 days a year I really like all my trees :~)

Many years ago I planted several fast growing pine trees for shade. As you would guess they were huge trees in just a few years. I had to pay a tree trimming company to take them down. Not going to try that again. : )

I don't know yet. It may curve. If we go into the mid cone area once it it is in the Gulf, I have to get the horses out, and get back here. I'm not going to do anything this weekend, too early. I still may drive up. I'll let you know tomorrow evening, ok?

Houses aren't built for ventilation anymore , either. We used to live in an old house. We had trees. Even on hot days there was a breeze. For safety , I guess we build rooms now with usually one medium sized window. Remember the houses that had 2-4 windows with screens on each side?

Yes, I remember those old houses with large windows. Thieves climbing through were not much of a problem then. Usually the thought of a double barrel blast of rock salt in the seat of the pants would keep im honest.

We didn't have AC when I was a kid. I don't know what we would do without it now. Wonder why? We have even gone to a hotel when it went out. I can't sleep without it. Funny thing is, that it isn't because it gets hot but I have to have the noise that is there that you don't hear until it stops. When the power goes out at night , I wake up immediately.

LOL! I think we had a window fan before we got AC. The fan was not much help if I remember correctly but it was noisey.

It's probably that lack of windows, you can't open the house up and let the breeze through. And those old wrap-around covered porches kept the sun off all the windows.

In college, we slept outside in summer, it'd cool off outside at night, but our house would stay hot. Too well insulated now I think :~)
