The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Lynn, If you can, contact Great Basin Equine Medicine & Surgery, PO Box 756, Gardnerville, NV 89410, Tele. 775-265-7800, Fax. 775-265-7805, www.horsedocs.com

Talk to one of the vets there. They did surgery on our colt (they do all of our vet work usually) for, I think it's called ODC. They scraped his stifle on both sides. I don't know if they have any suggestions or treatments but I do know that they handle a lot of things that even five years ago couldn't be fixed. (I have two foals off a mare that "wouldn't ever have a foal again")

Do you live anywhere near a University Equine Center?

Don't know THAT much about it but it would be worth a phone call. I have been hearing good things about it, for joint and ligament injuries, especially. Good luck and God bless you for your devotion to the little guy. Keep us posted.

There's no way of knowing about the cartilage...vet says it doesn't show on xrays. He's had both joints lavaged a number of times. All we know is that there is some moth-eaten damage in the hock. Actually, we're not so concerned about the hock anymore as it seems fully functional, not holding excess fluid and he seems to not be in pain on the hock. It's the opposing stifle that seems the current immediate problem. I'm starting to come to the conclusion that his patella is dislocated. Isn't that something that can be fixed rather simply?

And I know he is going to be spoiled beyond belief; he's already getting manners training cause if he makes it, he's going to be a huge boy ;)

Thanks to all
Lynn

I did have a friend who had a colt that went thru this. He seems to have recovered fully, he's 6 now. I guess he didn't have it as bad as yours. Good luck.

Good Morning. Beautiful day today (finally). Sunny, temps in high 70's. Alison is showing today, so I am heading to see her in a bit. Burton Fairgrounds, Estrogen, if you are not doing anything today.

Thanks for the Birthday wishes.

Sorry, I can't be any help on the TB colt.

Back from the show. Alison did real well. There were two judges today, so it was double points. Each one judges separately. In English Showmanship she won a first and second. I missed that class. In Western Showmanship she won a fourth and sixth. As you can see by the photo (Alison is second from left), the competition was fierce today. She didn't place in Western Horsemanship or in Western Pleasure. The classes are Walk-Trot, 11 and under. Andy was a pickle in horsemanship and would stop trotting. She had an excellent pattern thou. In pleasure she did better at keeping him going, but those kids are hard to beat. She was upset, but hey, that's horse shows. Always another one down the road.

Getting ready to do her pattern in horsemanship. I zoomed a little too close.

Taking a break in the shade and listening to last minute instructions from Mom.

The organization she showed at today, in order to qualify for year end awards, it has to be same horse/same rider. In the other one, the points go on the rider. When she shows PJ, in the other organizations, she does much better. He is a very well seasoned show horse. But like you said, win some, lose some. She has to learn sportsmanship also. I saw a lot of tears from kids today. No matter what, it has to be fun.

It's pretty nice here this morning. I'm getting ready to go ride. The next CTR i want to go to is Sept 9-10, 6 wks away. I can't miss to many days now for him to be in shape. This ride use to be one of the harder ones, but last year it was very easy, but I don't want to get caught and they change it back, and not be ready.
