The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

...So, guess I will be unloading hay this afternoon in the heat...

If you've got lights in the barn, wait until after dark. It helps a lot. I've also found that putting on a wet t-shirt under my denim shirt helps keep me kool. Sometimes when I'm having to bushhog in the heat of the day, I'll wet myself all over with the hose before getting on the tractor. I'll be dry in an hour or so and I'll get off and go do it again.

We've been fairly lucky up my way and have gotten some sporadic showers, just enough to keep the grass growing so the hay crop seems to be pretty good. It was thundering all around us yesterday evening but we never got any rain. Hopefully somebody did though.

Well it must bo going totally around me! Frog got some and Jemiam got some and I didn't! We have not had rain since May 21st. Pasture is all brown our new trees have to be watered daily. It was 99 at the Birmingham airport yesterday and should be close to the same today.

We have rainy falls, winters and springs, but we have wonderful summers... and I love that the winter rain gives us the shade of tall trees when it is hot. I'm just not real SUN tolerant... it wears me out :~]

It's gotten a lot harder to deal with the last few years for me too....When it starts getting over 90, that's too hot. I use to be alright till it hit the 100's.

But below 50 is getting to cold now too:)

Sounds like a good idea! I think I read somewhere about how to make home made cool packs by taking a sponge and soaking it in a mixture of alcohol and water then putting it in a zip-lock bag in the freezer. I don't know the alcohol/water proportions, but apparently the alcohol keeps the water from freezing completely so the whole thing stays somewhat soft and form-able like the ice packs you get from the hospital. It's one of those things, I've never tried it but I keep on meaning to.

Oct. would be nice, you might catch the trees changing colors. The last few years, I've started switching around to where I enjoy the fall more then spring.

It was 97 here yesterday. I think it's supposed to cool down into the upper 80s by this weekend though. A regular cool front! ;o) I forgot to call Shirley last night too. {ducks and covers} I was trimming Bluebell and Whirl's feet last night and it was 8 o'clock before I got home. I didn't have a dry thread on. Then I just crashed.

Let's just go on Sunday. I've got a feeling he'll have to work on Saturday anyways coz he was off last Saturday. He and Billy rode at the Horse Camp. I'll call him this evening. I know I said that yesterday, but I'm gonna clip a note on my purse this time. I think I'm getting Oldtimers! ;o)

The fall colors would be terrific :~)

Fall color isn't something the NW is particularly good for, we have mostly evergreens, and alder trees that turn more of a sickly than pretty yellow in fall :~D

Need some input:

I'm thinking about changing my farrier appointment to after I get back from Wa. I'm not riding much. It doesn't look like Harley's hoofs are growing real fast. I'd sure like to make sure we get past that missing chunk, but that's still a long ways off....do you think that's too long to wait?

coastal at $6 a bale

Wow! Third cut alfafa does not go for that much here. We have 200 bales on order for 2 bucks a bale. It is a timothy grass mix. Gosh, I feel bad for you horse owners, that have to pay that price.

If that's what you want to see, it would even be better to wait till the end of Oct, maybe even early Nov.

The only thing tho, that runs the risk of getting into colder weather...it's just so iffy at that time of year.

What's the total time between trims if you wait?
