The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

The pleasure rides also might tend to attract more horses riders that aren't really in shape to handle it... more than the competitive rides, hopefully.

Well, stay cool there... I'm afraid by this weekend you wouldn't even have found refuge from the heat here, it's gonna be hot everywhere.

WEll, yeah:). Obviously since you've been doing the shorter ride and you didn't have a problem, you won't know for sure, and then when you want to do a longer one, if it's not the pad you'll have it happen again:). You want to know for sure right?

You will need to recreate the scene with one change at a time to find out for sure the cause:).

...several horses died this past weekend at a trail ride somewhere around here, and that several riders had to hauled out of the woods due to the heat...

Wow, that's awful. You'd think that people would know better than that, unless they got out and got lost somewhere like BladeRider did a few weeks back. She's lucky that they all made it back ok. At least it wasn't as hot then as it is now. If you get out like that and run out of water, for either horse or rider, it can be catastrophic.

I know the more times we do that ride the easier it'll get. Or it'll kill us :~)

The thing is, 5 years ago, I did 25s on him and it didn't feel that long. And of course, 10 years ago, Bay was doing twice that distance. It's all what you're used to.

So sorry to hear there wasn't a happy ending. I know it's part of life but it's the sucky part.

5 years ago you were both a lot younger.

Well, work up to it, you're use to 8 milers, so do something in between 8 and 15.
I think I saw on one of the signs an 11 mile trail. Of course I don't know you may have to go 5 before you get to the 11, so that won't help:|

I'd say they got out there not thinking there is NO water anywhere out now. Everything is dried up.

If we can get the truck up to that upper trailhead, we can do a lot of new loops including those upper trails. We just haven't tried it with the trailer full of horses. I'd like to go scope it out again, now that we've got some more experience with trailering, and seen what we think the truck can handle.

Thanks, it was a sucky ride home from Stillwater that day...

We just never knew when/how he broke his jaw, to get if fixed when it happened. It wasn't till after it healed that problems started, because it healed crooked. He was going to start having problems chewing in the near future

But that was a long time ago, 15-16 years ago....

Well she made up for it later. I finally found a disadvantage to big butted horses. At 5'2" there are blind spots. I've been having a little problem with her steping out lately when I mount so this morning we worked on "stand" I have this routine when we practice this where I walk completely around her and drag the lead rope all over her before stepping on the box. She has to not move. I keep my hands on her so if I feel her tense I can check her. If she moves she runs circles. Today, I'm walking behind her and I hear this screaming noise and I felt her start to jump. The rope was up so I had left the gate open in the arena (on purpose) and here comes this horse snorting and blowing and charging us. Sarah Lee never moved. She jumped in place and just stood there, even as I chased the intruder out. I guess she didn't want to do any more circles. It was one of those situations where you should be scared but don't have time to be.

Well take a drive up there sometime, with just one horse in the trailer and see how it goes.

I really think your truck would be fine, but I understand your hesitation. It's quit a climb. I'd just try it with one, or even just the trailer, then one. You should be able to tell by then how much more it could take.

If I remember right, a lot of the climbing is the last half mile to the trail head. I've even wondered if we couldn't just park at the bottom alongside the road somewhere, if there was a place to turn around. Or unload and have someone hold horses while the other goes and turns the truck around empty and come back down. ~Something~ ought to be able to work. Maybe unload one before the big climb and ride up the last little bit, following the trailer.

I just had to say that. I tend to over tip and my husband likes to pick at me about it and when we get to talking about how much to tip at a restaurant, he'll always say that.

Well, giving him a tip was a big deal for me:), I'm pretty cheap, and in restaurants they have to "earn" it. I never tip just because. It pisses me off the places where the tip is figured in. When that happens I don't ever go back...no matter how good it was.
