The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

We just had some folks try to dump a couch in the store parking lot, next to our driveway. :-\

They pulled ~into~ our driveway (which piqued our interest) and we saw them dumping bags of garbage into the store dumpster... then they pulled a couch out of the back, and we went out to our gate. Hair yelled "Hey! What are you doing!" The lady came over and innocently tried to explain that they were just leaving it there for a few minutes until a friend picked it up. (And we thought.. yeah, BS, leave a couch you care about in the rain.) So we said "No flippin' way. Why don't you load it back into your car to wait for them." And stood there watching them.

And load it back up they did... and proceeded to pull out of the parking lot and drive away. But we wrote down their licence plate number, just in case. Damn trailer trash. ;~)

We'll probably see that couch again, on our trail ride this weekend, up in the forest :~\

The new owner of the store has been cleaning out the store-room and there's already a bunch of frap out there that I'm not real happy about... but as busy as that guy's been fixing up the store, I'm sure it's temporary, and I decided not to hassle him about it.

We've had people try to dump stuff at the end of our road, We live on a road that dead ends, and there is a big gully at the end.

We've seen trucks full of trash and frap and Mack will jump in the truck and follow them there and run them off. The sad/funny thing is several times it's been people who live in this neighborhood but not on this road. That really hacks me off.

When we first moved out here, kids use to party all the time at the end of road there. We always wanted to just join them:)

Is it expensive to dump at the county dump, there, the way it is here?

My dad talks about how the woods used to be clean till they raised the rates at the dump. Then all the dead end roads started filling up with old refrigerators, couches and mattresses.

Our dump isn't bad for loose garbage, I think it's $8 per hundred pounds, but there's this outrageous $40 surcharge, in addition to the weight, for large upholstered furniture and on refrigerators.

You're right, you can't make out the silhouette of a pinto in the dark.

And I could never figure out how zebra stripes work as "camouflage". It wasn't until I saw something on Discovery that pointed out that a galloping wall of stripes makes it very hard for a predator to pick out a target without risking all those nassty hooveses in among that mess of stripes.

Whew. Well I'm glad that you caught them in time. Maybe they're related to the trailer trash that used to live there. ;-)

Could be! Could be that we're known as a good place to dump frap, in trailer trash circles :~)

Well then, here's a story to help you pass the time...

I got the little jack rounded up and corralled in the barn yesterday afternoon in preparation for his doctor visit. He wasn't hard to catch at all. I just set a bucket of feed in the barn and he came right in. Of course he was none too happy when I shut the gates and kept him in there. I had to add corral panels on the inside and outside of the gates to keep him there though because he was small enough to crawl out under the gates that were already there. My FIL was going to load him up this morning and take him to visit 'Dr. Knife'. Here's a pic of Little Jack and Bob, aka Mutt and Jeff, inspecting the load of corral panels and bull panels that I brought with me...

After I got the jack situated, I enlisted the help of my sister-in-law and went to work on attaching the bull panels over the bad section of barbed-wire fence. My husband showed up later and we finished it off. About the last hour was in the dark. It wouldn't have been too bad if it hadn't been for the two big privet bushes that had grown up on the fence line. I had a pruning saw in the jeep, but of course I didn't have the jeep with me because my FIL had used our old truck to go pick up the bull panels at the co-op and I had just stopped by his house and switched vehicles. So we ended up trying to take down small trees using lopping shears and brute force. But we finally got it finished around 9:30pm. To say that my husband was as ill as a hornet by then would be a gross understatement. He hates it when he gets drafted into 'my' projects, although this one really wasn't 'mine'. It was his Daddy's jack that got through the fence, but since it was 'my' mares that would bear the consequences of his visit it became 'my' project. Such is life I guess. But it's fixed (the fence and the jack) and I'm glad of it.

Oh - I think that jack is the cutest thing I ever did see!

And though he tries to be good, I do know a ~little~ about trying to enlist husbands into my projects!

It always does help to bring the right tools for the job :~) I can imagine the language wasn't good trying to get brush and frap out of the way.

Those panels are nice, wish I had some.

You know I just thought about something. The flight number I gave you this morning was the one from here to Dallas. From Dallas to Seattle it's flight #669.

He was so pissed that he wasn't saying anything much at all. I don't know which is worse.

Hopefully he is by now. My FIL was supposed to take him around 10:30. It was gonna cost him $95 though and I think he was debating about whether to go ahead and have it done or just take him to the sale because the jack really isn't worth that much. I don't know which one he ended up doing. I guess I'll find out this afternoon.
