The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Those are the kind of problems that finally drove me to Horse Chow. The hay supply around here was never consistent in quality or quantity. It was very worrisome.

Good morning:). Mack and I stayed downtown till 11:00 watching the rain from the big windows. I think it rained most of the night. Should help pastures, but probably won't change the hay situation much, since it's suppose to get really hot and dry for a while now.

My fees went up 40 dollars a horse this year. Supposedly from feed prices and gas. They bale their own hay. Horse shoes went up too.

If you plant alfalfa is it difficult to take them off feed? There is a horse ranch up north that only feeds that and the horses look really good.

Me, too.

Today was set for packing, that's going to take all of maybe 15 minutes:)...going to be a long day, and tomorrow even longer. I think Mack is going to take off work, and we are going to go have a nice lunch and hang out till it's time for him to drop me off. That will help.

Today they are down at the building working on the plumbing for Jenny's shop, I'll probably go down there later and hang out to kill time....altho being around Mack, Charlie, and Travis when they are working on something like that can be a bit stressful:)...beer might be good:)

Well, I had an interesting afternoon yesterday. When I got to the barn yesterday afternoon, my FIL's little year old jack was in the pasture with my horses. He'd been in the adjacent pasture with the cows ever since he was born last spring, but they took his mama away earlier this spring to wean him and he'd taken to hanging around the fence with the mares. They were teasing him and I guess he decided that yesterday was the day to make his big break.

A small section of fence had been real loose ever since Grace and the jenny had their little altercation through it last year and I'd noticed recently that the little jack could stick his head and shoulders between the strands with no problem, so it was just a matter of time before he decided he could just step on through. I kept hoping that Pop would move him somewhere else with some of the other cows but he never did. I guess I was just in denial and didn't want to deal with it because he's wild as a buck and you can't even get a hand on him, much less a halter. I don't think he's old enough to do anything yet, plus I don't think he's tall enough, but you never know. With my luck the mares would find a hole to stand in and I'd end up with 2 or 3 little half-ass mules that ain't worth a dime. So I put all the mares in the new electric fenced lot with Tennessee and left Bob out in the pasture with the little jack to keep him company until we could come up with a plan for what to do with him.

Of course they had to have several wrestling matches trying to show each other who's boss. Bob would grab him by the back of the neck and clamp down, but the little bugger would manage to squirm around and bite bob on the knees and then Bob would get down on his knees to keep from getting bit and they would wallow around and get back up and go at it again. The little jack would rear up and put his feet up on Bob's neck and try to bite him on the face but even then he wasn't as tall as Bob was just standing flat footed. At one point, Bob was biting the little jack on the butt and the little jack got under Bob's belly and started biting him on the back legs and Bob was having a time trying to figure out how to get him out from under there. It was really funny. I would've taken some pictures but my camera batteries were still dead from this weekend. After about 30 minutes of it, they both decided it was more trouble than it was worth and called it a draw.

The plan is to get some corral panels over there and herd him into the barn and then get a cattle trailer down there and run him back out into that, then take him to the vet's to be gelded. They'll just have to handle him like they do cattle and run him through the cattle chute and into the head catch. In the meantime, my FIL is going to go get some of those heavy duty wire bull panels and attach them to the t-posts on top of the existing barbed wire to keep him from coming through again when he gets back.

There's never a dull moment when you have livestock around!

I don't know, you might could start a new fashion, gaited mules:)

Poor little bugger, it's just nature calling.

I went out and watered the ground rods for the fence real well, so horses will stay put when I bring a new one in. Need to go set up a water bucket for her, and a feed bucket, and such... Oh - and finish tidying this house up :~)

You know how you told me to tie something on my suitcase so I'd be able to identify it easy. I had some of that curl ribbon, I fold up a length and tied it to the handle, It's not real full, but more then just one strip...will that pass?
