The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It depends, when you start talking about great distances, how much it would be worth to avoid a breakdown far from home :~)

It's between $20-$30 a day, lots of times, to rent a car. Maybe even less if you have AAA. And it's new and low miles, and if it breaks down, you get another one and they fix it. :~)

And it is even cheaper if you are renting longer than a few days, because then you can get a weekly rate, rather than the daily rate.

It is money well spent, IMHO.

Good morning all:)

We still haven't had any rain, but it's cloudy this morning. The weather forecast says after today the temps are going back up to the high 90's with heat index in the 110 range:). I've picked a good week to leave here:)

Update 188: Just spoke to Peter Brette this morning on the horse path...all things considered, it seems like Barbaro had a decent night last night (sunday night). Peter is planning to visit after work this morning so I'll try to get more details later today. Keep all your positive energy coming for Barbaro today; he will surely need it.

Good Morning.

Lousy looking out there again. Oh well, it's fair week. That is expected. Officially starts tomorrow, with harness racing today.

The weather's looking great for your trip.... we ~might~ get rain Tues and Wed, with just a couple showers possible on Thursday in some areas. If they are right, and we actually get what they forecast, I'd like that. Would settle the dust down and give everything a drink and then clear up :~)

~Almost ready~ :~)

Just don't look in our closets, lol - Sheesh we have a lot of frap we need to get rid of!

LOL, we don't even use our closets here anymore. I hung a bar in the utility room and we just keep our clothes there. One of the extra closets has the fully decorated Christmas tree in it, the other has frap, for that matter, we have two bedrooms full of frap...My walk in closet if full of clothes we don't wear anymore, but are too lazy to sort thru.

Sounds like life here... Our closet wasn't big enough for both of us when ecurbh moved in, so I gave it to him and converted the little bathroom in our bedroom to my closet - I use the curtain rod for the shower in there top hang all my stuff :~D

I've jammed up the rest of the closets in the house with as much as I can fit in. I should get rid of 90% of it, if I'd just take the time.

Hey there! I was just catching up after the weekend and see that y'all are getting ready for the Saddle Moot. I'm getting really excited about it too. It sounds like it should be a really fun and interesting get-together.

BladeRider and I had another nice ride this past weekend and I took a few pics at the break area so I thought I'd share em with y'all...

When we first got there, there were just a few other riders...

Then all of a sudden it was like somebody opened the flood gates and people started pouring in...

The weather was cooler with a really nice breeze, but shortly after we left the break area we got caught in a pretty good shower and Gary was trying to put his poncho on over his hat! A true cowboy never takes his hat off apparently. LOL! BladeRider had it covered with her plastic bag poncho, but Blade didn't care much for it when we took off and that poncho filled up with air and started flapping in the breeze. It got a little interesting there for a few minutes and I was afraid they were going to part company but he finally settled down when he figured out that it wasn't going to eat him.

Then it cleared up and got steamy...

But all in all it was a really nice ride.

Oh my... Bay would have been standing on the next rise snorting back at me if I'd have put on something like that :~D Look at the guy behind, even shaking and flapping that yellow thing around, his horse is not even paying attention.

I have a question. I hope it doesn't sound dumb but how do you decide if a board, plank, bridge etc. is strong enough to hold a horse before you walk them across.?

Here is some more information from ESPN just now:

2 new smaller plates. Three hour surgery, on Saturday. The entire procedure with recovery time took 15 hours.

Posted by: Lynda at July 10, 2006 09:04 PM

oops, that's is what ESPN just said. She also said that the plates were situated in the pastern area? She said that joint above the pastern was fusing nicely, but it's the ankle joint that is having more problems.

Posted by: Lynda at July 10, 2006 09:08 PM

Michael Matz told Jeanine Edwards that the horse was very physically exhausted on Sunday. I dont think that they are going to be able to do this too much more. The plate and most of the screws were all infected.

LOL! Yeah, I'd forgotten about Bay's particular aversion to plastic bags. I'll bet he would've been a snorting deamon if you'd shook one of those out on him.

Blade did pretty well in the 'putting on' phase but got a little bug-eyed when it filled up with air. He'd been ridden with the regular ponchos like Gary and I had on but this one was more like a dry cleaning bag and very light weight, so it flapped in the slightest breeze, and I think that's what did him in. He did real good though and listened to BladeRider and didn't go bolting off up the trail like he so badly wanted to. We slowed back down to a walk and let him get his wits back and he was fine after that. Jake and Bob never even flinched. They're all such good boys!
