The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Having a cast/brace on does make other things hurt.

Good Morning!

When there is a bad break, during the healing process the muscles around the break cramp terribly. Maybe he is having some muscle cramping and spasms. When my son was 5 years old he broke his femur at the growth plate and was in traction for 28 days and a half body cast for 6 weeks. The muscle spasms would wake him up screaming from a deep sleep.

When I broke my arm as a kid, we got it set and casted and I went home, but it started swelling under the cast in the night. Swelling with nowhere to go was REALLY painful, I know I was screaming and they had to take me in. Funny how we really don't remember pain. I remember what happened, but not how it actually felt.

Hello, Very nice picture of your horse and dog. After all those years together with your horse, you know each other pretty well. My Appaloosa gelding was 24 when he passed, 3 years ago. We were together for 17 years.

Nice for you to stop in and post the picture. Would you like added to the ping list?

I'd like to see those clouds of steam come out of it:). From past experience, I know seeing it live is going to be soooooo much more awesome then in pictures, and this picture is pretty cool. Steam or not, I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Is the lava dome at the right side of the crater, just at the edge of the shadow? If that's it, that's surprising to me anyway. I'd have thought it would have formed at the lowest spot in the crater.

It's bigger and closer in real life :~D And the thing you get from going there is the actual drive getting up there. Even after all these years, you can see impact. The scale of it is the thing pictures can't show.

You would just crack up at him. Yes, he has butted me. Kids think it is really cute to get him all agitated pushing on his head. Then he rears back and comes at you sideways...lol He really had a great time running all over the place. I was thinking about you and how you would enjoy one.

The little cone-shaped dome on the right hand side that you can see in the live cam is the 'new' dome that's been building in the last year. If you look at our picture below from last summer, that dome's not visible, just the 'old' wide low round dome in the center of the crater.

It was steaming a little that day, out of the top, and out of a big fissure down in the mouth of the crater.

By car? Just there to Johnston Ridge. It's close there, only a couple miles to the crater. You can hike closer, if you want :~)

No, the hike is more work than I've wanted, I don't work that hard!

There is some riding up there, you can ride horses darn near up to the ridge on the far side. I got some trail maps when I was up there last time, but I've never done it. It's a long haul, you have to go way south of the mountain and come in from the far side.

And thanks for your super inside info. Do you exercise horses on the track?

Here's ~A~ trail map that shows the riding trails south of the mountain... We'll be on the north side at Johnston ridge. I guess the horse trails don't climb the side of the mountain, but it seems close in person. And that side of the mountain wasn't washed out, it's still wooded. The blast went toward Johnston Ridge.
