I have a novel and a screenplay (based upon the novel) in the works right now. I expect to eat the costs on both, though I know that the latter will sell, though you may not see it on the Top Ten box office list as it presents a very non-Hollywood story.

Peter Benchley had a screenplay he couldn't sell, so he wrote a novel based on the screenplay. It became a bestseller, and he touted the screenplay as "based on the bestseller" : )
