"When we got DSL they provided support for one computer only." They may have grown more cooperative, or it could be a local thing. Call the cable support line and ask. It shouldn't hurt.

I got it working about 15 minutes after the modem was set up. (Mostly because I decided to RTFM *before* I booted up some other machines for testing...) And working the way *I* wanted it to maybe 10 minutes later.
